Two young Bermudian doctors, Dr Alton Trott and Dr Yusef Morant Wade, have opened up a medical practice specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology.It is called Contemporary Obstetrics and Gynaecology and it is in The Arches building on Berry Hill Road. The two specialists were inspired by their desire to provide patients with a sense of home and family.The decor is warm and comfortable — Dr Wade’s office, where the two doctors met with The Royal Gazette last week, is lined with bookshelves and has comfortable furniture with a fire place, making it reminiscent of a small library.Dr Trott said: “We wanted our practice to be homey — we don’t want you to feel you are coming to a sterile doctor’s office. We hoped to have that kind of relationship with our patients — we want it to be a family environment.”Dr Wade said: “What made me interested in going into OB-GYN is the continuing involvement with the patients — in their pre- to post-reproductive lives, menopause, and in multiple generations of a family. This is unique to the speciality. We become a part of a family. The biggest compliment a patient gives me is when they bring their daughter or mother in, and tell us we’re doing it right.”For both men, family ties were important reasons to return to Bermuda. Dr Trott said his ‘entrenched, strong’ familial connections played an important role in bringing him home, while Dr Wade explained that in his case he has his father’s legacy — the late L Frederick Wade, the long-time leader of the Progressive Labour Party who died as the party was on the cusp of gaining power a decade and a half ago — as a powerful force, although for the time being he does not see politics in his own future.Both doctors have young families of their own, and they also returned to the island because they wanted their children to experience life in Bermuda.Dr Wade and Dr Trott came from the United States to work in the King Edward Memorial Hospital a little more than a year ago. The two doctors, who had not known each other previously, developed a friendship while working together. “We came together with the idea of Contemporary OB-GYN — we both had very similar training on the East Coast and we just wanted to bring that to the community.”Among the advances in medicine the doctors hope to bring to their patients are minimally invasive procedures. Dr Trott said: “I am working with the hospital to get equipment here to do those procedures, so people don’t have to go overseas.”Both Dr Wade and Dr Trott were students at The Berkeley Institute, though not in the same class, before moving on to university to study for their undergraduate degrees. Dr Wade went to McMaster in Canada and then Wakefield University to do his post graduate degree. His medical training was at the Meharry Medical College in Tennessee and Drew Medical Center to specialise in OB-GYN.“Then I went to the Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and finished OB-GYN,” he said.Dr Trott went to Philadelphia University, and on to the Philadelphia School of Osteopathic Medicine. “I did my residency at St John’s Episcopal Hospital. From there, I went to Dover, Delaware and practised for four years before I came home.”It takes commitment to be a doctor — Dr Wade said the process has taken him about 12 years, and an unsettled lifestyle as he moved to different parts of the United States while completing his training.“The good thing about it is you get to know different people from all works of life, and different practicing techniques,” he said. “It’s a larger perspective.”
