Web developer and start-up advisor Ralph Richardson II came up with the idea for his latest product while travelling by ferry in Bermuda.“I wanted to have something in my pocket to check the ferry times for when I was trying to get to work or visit a client,” he said. “You can’t remember everytime the ferry is here or there.”Mr Richardson had the team at his Southern California-based tech company Maven 2.0 create an app for his personal use at first. But after about a year he decided it would make a good app for the general public and approached Marine & Ports. They enthusiastically agreed, he said.Mr Richardson had his team upgrade and create the SeaExpress Bermuda Ferry Schedule app, and it successfully went through the Apple approval process.Since its soft launch, the app has had more than 100 downloads in the past three weeks at a cost of $1.99.There will be an official launch soon in Bermuda. The app is a joint effort between Mave 2.0 and the Department of Marine & Ports, Mr Richardson explains.Mr Richardson, a former executive at Butterfield Bank, is founder and CEO of Maven 2.0. He lives in Riverside, California, but visits Bermuda regularly on business. The SeaExpress app displays easy-to-view departure and arrival times, fare information and route maps. For now it is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.He said a similar app for the bus schedule is not planned by his company at the moment, though he says it would be a great idea.
