TABS founder Hanson featured in top UK fashion blog
Rebecca Hanson and her Bermuda shorts business TABS has been featured in an extensive spread at Wear & Where, a blog run by two British fashion journalists, one of whom is the deputy editor at Glamour UK and the other at InStyle.
Described as highly respected among the London and international fashion industry, the blog boasts more than 11,000 unique users each month. The bloggers have worked or written for Glamour, Red, Brides, Easy Living, Vogue, The Telegraph, The FT and The Guardian. They say: “We’re mothers, writers and style enthusiasts.”
Being featured on the Wear & Where blog, in their Style Around the World section, said Ms Hanson: is “really exciting!
“I was introduced to Wear & Where’s Natasha Poliszczuk, assistant editor at Glamour UK, through a TABS supporter. She was brilliant and straight away said she “loved the range” and wanted to do something on the brand and me!”
The article is in a question-and-answer format, with Ms Hanson responding to queries like: “What are the main differences between the way women dress in the UK versus Bermuda?”
Her answer: “In London you commute in a sea of black, in Bermuda it’s a kaleidoscope of colour! In London there’s a carelessness to the way people dress; that Kate Moss ‘This old thing? — I just threw it on and look gorgeous’. In Bermuda, women take time over their appearance and are proud of it. The attitude is more ‘Damn straight: I look fine!’”
Asked about TABS, she said: “Everyone has heard of Bermuda shorts, but no Bermudian has ever stepped up and said what ‘The Authentic Bermuda Shorts’ are. So I decided to show the world what Bermuda shorts are really made of!
“TABS was launched on Bermuda Day — May 24 — last year. A year on, we have 14 Bermuda inspired shorts, belts and traditional socks and sell our product internationally via the online store and the leading local men’s department store AS Cooper’s. It’s an exciting time for Bermuda Shorts as we have seen them take centre stage on the 2014 catwalks and at the Winter Olympics.”
The feature includes an array of photographs featuring both Ms Hanson’s range of TABS taken by photographer Gavin Howarth, as well as a series of her wearing a variety of outfits, which were taken by her mother. There are also several detail shots of individual fashion pieces.
“I made sure I was wearing — and mentioned — as many local designers as possible,” she said.
“I believe it is important to get the message of Bermuda out and to highlight the local creativity and talent. It’s not just about my brand, its about me as a Bermudian representing my home.”
Among the items the young entrepreneur wore included a hat from Makin Waves Bermuda, and jewellery by Rebecca Little and Alexandra Mosher.
The Wear & Where blog encouraged readers to keep in touch with TABS, saying: ‘You can follow her on Instagram (tabs_bermudashorts); Twitter @TABS_BDA and Facebook (TABS. BermudaShorts).’
Ms Poliszczuk confirmed that it was a TABS supporter who had told her about Ms Hanson and her business. “Mark Jones is a keen proponent of all things Bermudan!
“He told me I really ought to do something on W&W with Becci as both she and her company were great. I took a look and saw that he was quite right: the shorts are fabulous (how much do I love that men can wear them to work with a formal jacket?) and I admired Becci’s business nous in spotting the potential. I just had to find the right angle.
“Our Style Around the World posts are hugely popular. Essentially, Alex Gorton, my co-editor, and I write about what we want to read!
When we’re planning/dreaming up posts, we think about what we want to read; what the women we know would like to read. Hence, Style Around the World was born. Of course we want to know what it’s like to dress like a Parisian. Or how the cool girls in Copenhagen get their effortless insouciance. Or — indeed — how on earth you dress when it’s summer pretty much every day — as Becci does. You can imagine how fascinating that is when you live on this grey rainy isle.
“She was the perfect girl for the feature. And we love a girl with a great business — I think our readers find women who strike out on their own really inspiring. And we’re doing the same — so it’s great to be able to promote like-minded women.”
She explained Wear & Where had its beginnings when Alex Gorton, her co-editor and friend, met more than ten years ago when they were assistants at InStyle magazine. “Between us, we’ve worked across many of the big UK titles. I’m currently on maternity leave from my role as deputy editor at Glamour magazine — a role I job-share, which gives me time for my children and for W&W.
“We talked for ages about doing something for us — a place we could write about what fascinates us and what’s piquing our interest this week. We were forever saying: ‘Oh, I wish someone would write a feature about ‘x’ — now, we just do it! Namely, fashion — from how women with great style get dressed to a great high street find; interiors — sneak peeks into gorgeous homes; self — from motherhood matters to business tips from brilliant women, travel, children.
“One day we decided to just do it — and Wear & Where was born around my kitchen table. We now have around 11,000 unique users a month — and growing.”
The article, which was just posted on Wednesday, had been shared 55 times and tweeted 12 times, at the time of writing this article.
Ms Hanson said: “For me, this is great international exposure and reaches an audience of fashion forwards and helps raise awareness of Bermuda, Bermuda Shorts and our Island’s creativity and style.”
