A start-up company in the music business aims to put the beat back into Bermuda.

And Nakternl Entertainment, the brainchild of Shannon Coddington, who performs under the DJ Siid James name, and business partner Mike Shawr, now runs a series of events around the island injecting new life into the music scene, focusing on Euro sounds like house music.

DJ Siid said: “Entertainment in Bermuda tends to be a bit one-dimensional. There is a segment of Bermuda and tourists as well, which are being completely left out.

“We do something similar to what people are doing in other countries, but this has an island vibe.”

Mr Shawr, who focuses on the business side of the venture, while DJ Siid does the music, added: “You can go to lots of bars and hear exactly the same music.

“We want to do something different. People don’t want to go out night after night and hear the same thing. They want to hear something different and that’s where we fit in.”

The duo put on a monthly house party series dubbed Housestyle Takeover, held at various locations, but currently based at Blue Water Anglers Club on East Broadway, Hamilton, with the next event scheduled for Saturday night.

Nakternl also throw a weekly party at Ambiance on Angle Street in Hamilton on Sundays, sponsored by vodka firm Smirnoff and geared towards specific industries like hairdressing and hospitality, who work on Saturdays, but often get Mondays off.

Mr Shawr said: “That’s dance music — house, electro and drum and bass.”

In addition, DJ Siid is the resident DJ for the three Friday night mini-cruises on party boat Uber Vida.

DJ Siid, also a bartender and from Devonshire, said: “The cruises at 6pm and 8pm are cocktail lounge cruises, so it’s like chill music during those and the 10pm cruise is what we call Ibiza Bermuda, which is Bermuda’s only weekly dance party.”

He added: “If Bermuda is going to compete on any level, we have to diversify our musical offerings and our nightlife offerings.”

Mr Shawr, also a bartender, from Hamilton Parish, added: “It’s not just nightlife, it’s entertainment period. It’s not a knock against what guys are doing right now — I just think some things can be done way better.”
