Kaitlyn Simmons loves shopping — and she has turned that passion into a business venture.

The Little Things is a shopping concierge service offering personal shopping services to clients in apparel, gifts, groceries and events.

Mrs Simmons started the business in December last year.

She has always been into fashion and has started doing personal shopping for family and close friends for a few years before deciding to go into business.

This is not only a shopping service but Mrs Simmons also offers consultations to understand clients’ needs and wants.

“It is what I love to do and I’m good at it,” Mrs Simmons said. “I make it my business to stay on top of the latest trends in fashion, home goods, events planning and everything kids.

“But I make it personal for each shopper, taking the time to get to know their needs and likes and providing an end result they are happy with.”

Her early life experience honed her knowledge of the industry, as she worked in retail as a teenager during weekends and holidays.

“I have always loved interacting with customers and helping them find what they are looking for or even helping them realise what they didn’t know they needed,” she added.

Mrs Simmons pursued a degree in fashion business in Seneca College, Toronto, Canada.

“I have learnt the basics of running a business, customer service, fashion evolution and many other helpful aspects,” she said. “After I returned to Bermuda, I obtained a job at Gibbons Company in the display department and worked my way up to buyer for the kitchen and tabletop department.”

Many people lead busy lives and some do not have time to shop. Mrs Simmons saw this as a great business opportunity.

“My family has been pushing me to do it for quite some time now, but I have always been a bit hesitant,” she said. “In December, I was made redundant and felt it was a now-or-never opportunity.

“As hard as a redundancy can be, this has been quite the blessing. Life is busy, people don’t always have time to shop or they don’t know what they should be purchasing.

“It was a problem I saw over and over so I figured why not help others by doing what I love and making money while doing it.”

Although the venture is in its early stages, Mrs Simmons said the response has been positive.

She added: “I haven’t had a full marketing plan yet and surprisingly the response has been quite good. I have picked up clients mainly through word of mouth. I am now launching the social media aspect of it and I am expecting business to grow even more.”

Mrs Simmons shops for clients both locally and internationally and plans to travel in May to bulk-shop for clients.

“We aim to offer you a final product you will be happy with, offering knowledge and advice that provides you with options you may not have previously considered,” she added.
