Seeing the amazing party possibilities

Bermuda might be small, but it’s filled with party possibilities, as far as Selange Gitschner and Matt Strong are concerned.

Running event planning and production company Dasfete, the couple have organised events on the top of the old Casemates prison, raft-ups off private islands and set up nightclubs in caves.

“A lot of times people in Bermuda say we don’t have it in Bermuda or we can’t do it here,” Ms Gitschner said. “Absolutely we can! Where the resources are limited, that pushes you to be more creative. That is what I love.”

On New Year’s Eve they arranged a wedding reception in a private aircraft hangar.

“We had to create a space within a space as the entire venue was approximately 50,000 square feet,” Ms Gitschner said. “The ceremony was in the Unfinished Church at night with hundreds of candles lighting the space and a gorgeous custom floral arch with florals cascading along the windowsill. It was truly magical.

“For the hangar, we softened the space by using custom 14ft drape walls, boxwood planters walls with large mirrors. Twenty-three crystal chandeliers hung over the entire space with stage rigging, beautiful floral arrangements, mirrored tabletops and acrylic cocktail tables with floral installation inside and up-lit to catch the eye. There was also a large custom-made floral installation behind the band.”

Guests were amazed to see the space so transformed.

“My favourite part is when people walk in and say ‘where are we?’,” Ms Gitschner said.

She has an interior design background, but started her career at Hiscox Re doing marketing and public relations.

“Then I realised there was a need to offer services a bit more customised, unique, and really tailored to the individual or the company,” she said.

So she went out on her own, operating under her name, Selange Gitschner. Then she realised she couldn’t do it alone.

At the time, Mr Strong was working not very happily in insurance.

“I got into the insurance world for a little bit and realised it wasn’t my passion,” Mr Strong said.

So in September 2015, they joined forces and incorporated Dasfete. They have a strong focus on sustainability, using locally sourced items, foods, artisans and craftspeople wherever possible. At catered events, Ms Gitschner insists that glassware, plates and straws be reusable or biodegradable.

One of their most exciting jobs was organising a visit from Revolve, one of the largest women’s online clothing platforms.

“That was fun for us because they had a big vision,” Ms Gitschner said.

Over a period of two weeks last summer, Revolve brought to Bermuda some of the world’s top fashion influencers, such as Rocky Barnes, the model and blogger. Entertainment including rapper J-Roc were also brought in for the occasion.

Dasfete organised several raft-ups for the group at Mangrove Bay and Frick’s Point near the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Golf Club. For most of the influencers, it was their first time in Bermuda, and in some cases, their first time on a boat.

After the raft-up at Mangrove Bay, Dasfete took influencers to nearby Woody’s Drive Inn Two in Sandys for authentic fish sandwiches.

Each influencer later returned home and posted photos and videos of themselves in Bermuda, wearing Revolve clothing. Revolve likened the reach of the summer event to that of a Superbowl commercial, but less costly.

Dasfete has also worked with magazines such as Town & Country and Architectural Digest, and helped to organise the final 2017 America’s Cup gala.

Ms Gitschner and Mr Strong will celebrate their second wedding anniversary in September.

Mr Strong admitted that sometimes it was hard to shut work off when they went home.

“If we’re not talking about a specific project, we’re talking about strategy,” he said. “We have corporate clients to deal with during the day, and end up working events in the evenings and a lot of our big events fall on the weekends. We found we didn’t have any down time.”

So they tend to take breaks when things slow down.

“Still, when work comes along, we have to take it,” Mr Strong said.
