There might be two kind of parents in the world, moms and dads who adore back-to-school shopping, and those who find it sheer hell.

Dionne Pearman falls into the first category.

“I really like to shop,” she said. “I even like grocery shopping. I have a lot of patience for it.”

That’s why this summer she is offering a back-to-school shopping service.

For $30 an hour she’ll buy whatever you need for school: uniforms, pencils and pens, hair accessories, underwear, shoes, and deliver it straight to your door.

She’ll even take the children along so they can pick out their own covered pencil sharpeners and folders, and try on uniforms and shoes.

She doesn’t have the supplies on hand, but has a form that allows parents to tick off what they need and where they want them to be bought.

“I had some free time this summer so I thought this would be a good side hustle,” she said.

“I think there is a real need for a service like this, so I decided to go for it. I have a stepdaughter who is grown, so I know shopping is a struggle for some parents. Typical clients are parents who are very busy and really just don’t have the time or the patience.”

Ms Pearman said she has a good eye for things, and as a part-time nanny is used to dealing with children.

She thinks it’s a myth that there is nowhere in Bermuda to buy inexpensive school supplies.

“There are discount sales at the end of the school season,” she said.

“Sometimes they drop their prices. They have reasonably priced stuff at the Dollar Depot in Southampton. I think they are more budget-friendly. Some retailers realise people are struggling so the prices are more reasonable.

“Between Gibbons Company and the Phoenix Store they do have a great variety. Pirates Port have very reasonable prices on back-to-school supplies and also has a uniform shop. Some of the supermarkets have good prices as well. It depends on one’s budgets and what they prefer.”

She has only just started advertising the service, but so far, has received a lot of positive feedback.

“It is still kind of a new idea,” she said. “Most Bermudians wait until the last minute to buy what they need.”

Ms Pearman has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Her father, Ervin Grant, has been running Grant’s Ladies Boutique in the Washington Mall for more than 45 years.

“I have worked with him on and off since I was a teenager,” she said. “So I have been surrounded by retail my whole life.”

Ms Pearman particularly loves thrift shops.

“I love good-quality clothes,” she said. “Orange Bay Company is a great place to find things. I do go away at times to shop and find some great bargains.”
