Appleby has been named Official Law Firm of the SailGP Bermuda Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess.

The two-day, live-televised Bermuda sailing event on April 24-25 will launch SailGP’s Season 2 and include eight national teams: Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States.

The races will follow a month-long training camp in the Great Sound.

Julien di Biase, COO of SailGP, said: "We are delighted to welcome Appleby to our partner roster for the opening event of SailGP Season 2 in just under two months' time. Appleby has both a rich history in Bermuda – dating back over 100 years – and a longstanding association with supporting the sport of sailing at a high level, so we are excited to announce them today as an official partner for the Bermuda Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess."

Tim Faries, Appleby’s managing partner in Bermuda and Appleby Global Services’ chairman, said: “We are honoured to be partnering with SailGP in beautiful Bermuda where Appleby’s first office was opened almost 125 years ago. Bermuda with its long sailing legacy is the perfect place for SailGP’s F50 catamarans, one of the fastest sail race boats in the world.

“As the official law firm of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017, we are very excited to once again be involved in a sailing sporting partnership. We admire and share in SailGP’s ethos of excellence, youth and community involvement, gender equality, diversity and sustainability. We look forward to welcoming SailGP to our shores.”

Appleby said SailGP is an annual global sports championship featuring top-flight technology and the sport’s best athletes. National teams battle it out at speeds exceeding 50 knots in F50 catamarans that evolved from the foiling vessels first featured during the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017.

As the world's most cutting-edge sail racing league, SailGP is the first climate-positive sports organisation, going beyond a net zero carbon footprint in all business and event operations. Through SailGP’s gender equity initiative, for the first time, female athletes will be included in the training. SailGP Inspire, the global league’s community, education and outreach initiative will provide experiential learning through sailing for Bermuda’s youth as well as hands-on practical work experience.

Appleby said it is one of the world’s leading offshore law firms. Its global teams of legal specialists advise public and private companies, financial institutions and private individuals. The firm said it is a full service law firm providing comprehensive, expert advice and services across corporate, dispute resolution, property, regulatory and private client and trusts practice areas.

The firm, which operates in 10 locations globally, also offers a range of administration, reporting and fiduciary services focused on corporate structures through Appleby Global Services.
