Bermuda’s newest internet provider is offering “burstable bandwidth” which it says will prove valuable to business users because it ensures maximum bandwidth when they need it, without extra cost.

A Horizon statement said when businesses hit a busy period, and staff demand more from their internet, service usually slows down, causing waiting and delays.

It added: “Imagine a retail store during the holiday season or a large business in the middle of a big transaction (needing) additional bandwidth for a day or a week.

“Because internet bandwidth (the amount of internet you can use) is limited to the physical cables that are installed and the number of customers sharing a connection, (it) is impossible for regular cabled internet providers to offer more than the maximum used, without installing more cables that offer more bandwidth.”

Horizon CEO Gilbert A. Darrell explained: “As a business, you pay an amount per month for a certain amount of bandwidth. The issue is when you use your allotted amount of bandwidth or the network is congested.

“Suddenly applications take more time to load and work, files take longer to upload and download. You can’t get more bandwidth unless your internet company installs new cables, which also results in a higher monthly cost. It’s never a problem, until it’s a problem.”
