Walkers Bermuda and the TLC Group will be hosting a free webinar on data privacy next month.

The one-hour webinar, A Refresh: The Personal Information Protection Act 2016, will be held on November 8.

It is open to Bermudian business owners and operators, as well as the public, and is an important reminder for the business community on how to navigate the parameters as set by the Pipa legislation.

“All Bermuda residents enjoy the right to personal information privacy and protection,” a spokesman for Walkers Bermuda said.

Melanie Fullerton, the law firm's regulatory expert, and Taheera Lovell, chief executive officer and co-founder of The TLC Group, will provide an overview of Pipa, specifically focusing on the obligations of local organisations, the consequences of breaching the obligations under Pipa and a review of selected breach case studies.

Pipa was enacted in 2016, but has not yet been put into operation.

Ms Fullerton, regulatory and risk advisory senior counsel at Walkers, said joining forces with the TLC Group allowed Walkers Bermuda to provide its audience with not only a legal review and reminder of the obligations prescribed under Pipa, but to also allow the audience to hear how the legal requirements are implemented in practice.

“We expect our listeners to take away a robust understanding of not only the legal basis for protecting personal information but also practical steps that organisations can take to ensure compliance,” she said.
