Step returns with record number of speakers

James Quarmby is to give the keynote address at Step Bermuda

The Step Bermuda Conference returns next week with a record number of speakers and as a three-day affair for the first time.

The event, presented by the Bermuda branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, will feature more than 30 speakers and run from Tuesday through Thursday at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Rena Lalgie, the Governor, Step Global chief executive Mark Walley and David Hart, CEO of the Bermuda Business Development Agency, are among the featured speakers.

James Quarmby, partner and head of the private wealth team at London law firm Stephenson Harwood, will deliver the keynote address.

Alex Whittaker and Ashley Fife, the Bermuda branch chairman and vice-chairman, said: “He is a very well-known private wealth lawyer who is often interviewed on the BBC in the UK.

“He is a great speaker, draws a crowd and is prepared to confront controversial issues – he is our keynote for all of those reasons.”

Bermudian-based speakers include Gina Pereira, Meritus; Stephanie Bernard and Keith Robinson, Carey Olsen; Caljonah Smith, Appleby; Fozeia Rana-Fahy, MJM; and Scott Pearman, Conyers.

Marine biologist Choy Aming, co-founder of the Bermuda Shark Project, will give a talk about Bermuda’s maritime history.

Mr Whittaker and Mr Fife said: “We have a number of speakers on the island for the first time and Choy’s talk will give them a bit more of a Bermuda experience.”

Conference topics include design flaws in blacklist regulations and sanctions; family offices; trust investments and ESG considerations; trustees' investment in digital assets; protectors -- current developments; offshore case update; what trustees of trusts for LatAm families ought to know; the impact of global tax developments on offshore trusts; beneficial ownership and transparency; private banking and white-collar crime; and more.
