Digicel Business Bermuda has made donations to two local charities — Vision Bermuda and Open Airways.

The company said the money was raised as a result of various fundraising activities that took place over the course of the recently concluded PGA Tour FedEx Cup’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.

Digicel Business Bermuda has been the technology partner of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship for three years, providing ticketing, networking, wi-fi and TV services.

The company used key partnerships to raise funding and awareness for the work being done by Vision Bermuda and Open Airways.

Stephen Murad, Digicel’s regional chief executive, said: “Digicel is committed to supporting the most vulnerable people of Bermuda through key initiatives to raise both funding and awareness.

“Bermudians have a great passion for sport and this year’s championship was no different.”

The sum of $10,000 was raised for the two local charities, and Theresa Hall, executive director of Vision Bermuda, commented on how the money will help: “Vision Bermuda is dedicated to empowering people who are blind or vision impaired to learn how to live well with vision loss.

“With our ageing population and the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles, the frequency of diseases like diabetes and hypertension that cause vision loss is increasing.

“Adapting to living well with vision loss is achievable and our programmes and services have been designed to meet the specific needs of Bermuda residents with vision impairments.”

Liz Boden, of Open Airways, was also appreciative of the donation from Digicel Business, saying “the funds will be used to go to our island-wide asthma education programme”.
