Digicel increases internet rates July 1

Digicel Bermuda CEO Liam Donnelly has had “positive” consultations with the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda over price increases (Photograph supplied)

Digicel+ customers will see a jump in their bill starting on July 1, the telecommunications provider announced yesterday.

The firm said along with this price adjustment each customer will receive an additional speed boost to their current plan.

Liam Donnelly, Digicel Bermuda, chief executive officer said: “We are constantly investing in our network infrastructure to ensure that our customers have access to faster speeds, greater reliability, and improved connectivity.

“However, as with any business, we sometimes need to adjust our prices to maintain the high-quality, world class service that our customers expect and deserve from us.”

But the Digicel press release did not reveal the exact nature of the increases saying instead that it had communicated this adjustment directly with its customers.

“We’re unable to provide one standard amount/percentage across plans as it varies,” said Daniela Nandlal, marketing manager for Digicel Bermuda.

“However, in the individual communications to our customers, we have specified what the increase will be.”

The Digicel+ website is advertising 600 MBPS for $180, and Fibre 20 Home internet for $80 a month, among other packages.

Digicel is replacing its copper network with a fibre internet network.

“This process will be ongoing over the next three years, and will result in Bermuda having a faster, future-proof network,” Digicel said. “Fibre-optic cables can carry more information securely, will not rust or be affected by water and, if needed, allow for faster repairs.”

Mr Donnelly said they have had positive consultations with the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda to ensure that they do right by their customers.

“While we understand that a price adjustment is never ideal, we believe it is necessary to deliver on our commitment to Bermuda’s digital future,” Mr Donnelly said. “We appreciate the understanding and continued support of our valued customers as we navigate these challenging times and sincerely thank them for choosing Digicel as their service provider.”
