The building on Mangrove Bay Road in Sandys Parish that until recently housed Somerset Pharmacy is to come under new ownership, its owner has revealed.

Graham Fowle said: “The property is under contract to be sold.”

He said the deal was to close “soon”.

Somerset Pharmacy closed for good on July 31 after playing a huge role in the life of Somerset village for more than six decades.

As the closure of the traditional community pharmacy neared, the store’s operations manager, Melissa Butler, said there were several reasons for it shutting down.

She cited its owners nearing retirement age, the changing demographics of an older clientele, the changes taking place in healthcare on the island, a changing pharmacy business model, and the increasing consolidation of services in Bermuda.

Dr Butler said: “Independents have closed worldwide. In the US, this has been happening for 30 years. Bermuda is slow to pick up trends external to us.”
