New water park opens in the West End
A new water park in the west is splashing out for Bermuda’s adults and visiting tourists.
The owners believe that it won’t just be children eager to test their excitement on water slides, including one that is 30 feet tall.
Aqua Wonderland has just opened on Ireland Rangers field, billing itself as Bermuda's largest water park.
Married owner-operators Tyone Fubler and Torika Cholmondeley – who also run Just for Fun Rentals – say Aqua Wonderland was created as a result of customer demand after Mr Fubler's successful business selling fun castles.
Shipping delays frustrated the plan to take full advantage of the 2023 summer, but that did not deter the entrepreneurs. They are using the remainder of the summer as a test run in preparation for the 2024 season.
Aqua Wonderland began a soft opening a week ago and will continue to operate until September 17.
The couple reported: “Since its soft opening on August 28, Aqua Wonderland has quickly gained popularity among both young and old.
“Some adults have found themselves unable to resist the temptation to indulge themselves at this exciting new attraction.”
For $25, customers can enjoy unlimited hours of aquatic activities. Parents and guardians can relax in shaded tented areas nearby.
Each slide empties into one of three pools that have depths of up to five feet and they are surrounded by fun castles and inflatables.
Mr Fubler said: “We did some pop-up parks with my fun castles. And we found that people really enjoyed them and told me they would like to see one with water.
“I took the suggestion to heart, did some research and decided to bring one in. And here we are.
“This is our first year with the water park. We intended to open up a bit earlier but due to shipping delays we’re just doing a soft opening to see how everything flows, in preparation for next year.
“People are really enjoying it so far, even though we’re not fully set.”
The business last week was only operating one of the taller slides due to anticipated high winds, and the operators say they won’t bring the 30-foot slide online until the winds calm down.
They intend to take full advantage of the facility’s location, near popular tourist spots such as Snorkel Park.
It is also near enough to cruise ship berths, such as King’s Wharf, raising opportunities for an ongoing piece of the tourism market.
Mr Fubler believes expanded marketing efforts aimed at cruise ship passengers will pay dividends because of a special feature of the water park.
It uses seawater rather than chlorine-infused freshwater, ensuring there is no shortage even during peak periods when Bermuda sporting facilities would be using their fresh water supplies extensively to support cricket and other activities.
Mr Fubler said: “We did our research and found that most fields in Bermuda are not available during the summer time, because they’re being used for cricket and other activities, but we found the Ireland Rangers field to be a perfect location, and from where we can easily access and pump salt water. It just worked out perfectly for us.
“As far as the cruise ships are concerned, we are putting a presentation together for them, and hopefully we will be able to tap into that market; maybe not this year, as we are only running until September 17.
“Things are going well and we are just looking forward to next summer.”
