BAC Group bosses meet with representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Labour next week to explain why 19 workers have been laid off in the lead-up to Christmas.

BAC confirmed the layoffs on Tuesday but so far there has been no indication how many of those affected are Bermudian.

Up until last week’s layoffs, the company’s LinkedIn page said that of the more than 200 full-time employees, above 80 per cent were Bermudian.

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, told The Royal Gazette: “The ministry has requested a meeting with the BAC executive, and we will meet early next week.

“During the meeting, the ministry aims to seek clarity on the factors leading to layoff, the extent of the workers impacted and possible actions to have the workers restored to regular employment."

He added: "It is regrettable that employees have been laid off during the holiday season; the Employment Act 2000 governs the process for layoffs.

“The employer should have advised the employees of the reasons for the layoff and the expected layoff period. The employer has four months to recall the staff back to work, at which time, if they are not recalled or paid severance, they should contact the Department of Labour.”

In its statement on Tuesday, the company said: “BAC Group can confirm that the prolonged stagnation of Bermuda’s economy has led to staff layoffs at the group.

“The decision to lay people off was difficult and we extend our deep gratitude to those affected for their contributions.

“We will remain focused on navigating these challenging times while continuing to diligently serve our customers.”

Mr Hayward said: "Despite this unfortunate event, the Economic Recovery Plan and the Economic Development Strategy continue to support Bermuda's growth, employment and economic development.

“To that end, the Government's effort has already contributed to greater economic activity and the expansion of the economy.

“As we move into 2024, I expect this trend to continue and remain hopeful that employees who have been affected will soon be able to secure employment either back with BAC or another company."

Charmaine Burgess, director of communications and marketing at BAC, said the company had “nothing further to add” to the statement it issued on Tuesday.
