Chamber of Commerce to open special small-business division
Small businesses in Bermuda will get a bigger voice with the creation of a new section within the Chamber of Commerce.
The organisation is setting up a small-business division with a “clear vision to empower small businesses and entrepreneurs, fostering an environment that promotes advocacy, networking, knowledge building and collaboration”.
Adrienna Forbes, the chamber’s divisional advocate and training manager, said: “The inception of the division symbolises our commitment to the heart and soul of Bermuda's economy.”
Small-business owner Demeka Tacklyn, who runs Street Vybez by Tiny T on Court Street, believes this is a positive development.
“It is a good thing,” she said. “Small businesses sometimes have a different perspective.
“Hopefully, they can observe and support small-business needs, and truly respect what it takes to start a small business from scratch and then maintain it — from nothing to something.
“For example, a lot of entrepreneurs do not have the capital to start their business, and then can’t always afford taxes or even health insurance.
“If we can find avenues to support them, it gives them a chance to grow.”
Meanwhile, the chamber said there were four reasons behind the creation of the new division, including the feedback from small-business owners who felt marginalised within the existing structure.
Ms Forbes said the new division would also aim to provide small businesses “with a welcoming and supportive space where their voices can be heard and their unique needs addressed”.
“We recognise that all businesses, regardless of size, play a vital role in stimulating Bermuda’s economy. By empowering small businesses, we aim to create a ripple effect, boosting economic growth and creating a more resilient business landscape.”

In addition, she said, the division would provide an opportunity for engagement with the Government around the issues impacting business development and operations for small businesses.
Another reason, Ms Forbes said, was that “after completing programmes like Ignite, many small businesses feel isolated”.
“Additionally, there are those who haven't had the opportunity to benefit from such programmes.
“Our Small Business Division will bridge this gap, ensuring that businesses have access to the information, resources, and support they need for success.
The chamber is looking for volunteers for a newly established Small Business Advisory Committee, which will play a key role in shaping the framework and strategy of the Small Business Division.
Those interested should e-mail Ms Forbes at aforbes@bcc.bm with their contact details and a concise professional summary by January 26.
“With the creation of the committee, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a thriving business ecosystem where every entrepreneur and small business owner can thrive.
“We are keen to incorporate a wide spectrum of perspectives and are thus seeking participation from small-business owners, seasoned entrepreneurs and industry specialists,” Ms Forbes said.
“We look forward to fostering a diverse and dynamic committee to spearhead this exciting new venture. Together, we pave the way for a brighter future for small businesses in Bermuda.”
