Dilapidated building to be renovated to create apartments
The Bermuda Housing Corporation hopes to breath new life into a series of derelict apartments in St George’s.
According to a recent planning application, the BHC intends to convert four derelict units at the Chelsea Apartments on Redcoat Lane North into nine smaller units to help meet public demand.
While the existing units are all three-bedroom units, the application proposed turning them into two three-bedroom units, two two-bedroom units, one single bedroom unit and four studio units.
The interior renovation would also create an office, which would be located on the ground floor.
The application also requested a review by the Historic Building Advisory Committee to consider the proposed restoration of balconies on the grade 3 listed building.
The building is in a state of disrepair with smashed windows and plants growing from the walls.
The project was one of several highlighted in November by Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, in the House of Assembly to address the lack of affordable housing in Bermuda.
Mr Hayward said at the time: “The Government will encourage and support housing developments in residential zones as highlighted in the Bermuda Plan and specific plans for other geographical areas.”
