Game On serves up Bouchêe breakfast
Before its closure, breakfast was very popular at the Pitts Bay Road restaurant, Bouchêe. The French bistro’s red velvet waffles and eggs Benedict were favourites.
The restaurant closed last year when the owners of its 75 Pitts Bay Road home applied to tear down the space and replace it with a parking lot.
Starting on Friday, Bouchêe fans can enjoy their old breakfast favourites once again, at Game On Sports Bar & Grill on Bermudiana Road in Hamilton.
“We got Bouchêe’s head chef, Agnelo Fernandez, who was there for 22 years,” Game On co-owner Alex Marshall said. “We brought him over here. Now, we are rolling out the top 90 per cent of their breakfast items.”
When Mr Marshall and business partner Brian Bennett opened Game On in May, they served only light snacks and bar food. Since then they have been slowly growing the menu.
Mr Fernandez said that when Bouchêe first closed, he was not concerned because the owner Sara Masters wanted to look for another place.
“That did not happen,” Mr Fernandez said. “So I said to her, ‘I'll be working at Game On’. I told her I would try to carry on the Bouchêe legacy.”
He first came to Bermuda from Goa, India, in 2001, and worked at places such as Primavera Restaurant, Flying Chef and the White Sands Hotel before moving to Monty’s the predecessor of Bouchêe.
To accommodate breakfast, Game On will be opening an hour earlier at 7.30am. Patrons will be able to order breakfast until the early afternoon.
Mr Marshall said Bermuda lacked a variety of breakfast choices. He expects the new breakfast menu to appeal to just about anyone. There will also be a takeout service.
“We are not necessarily targeting tourists because they probably get breakfast on the cruise ships,” he said. “This should appeal to everyday Bermudians and also people who work in insurance, reinsurance and other businesses near us.”
The new breakfast menu will have items such as codfish and potatoes, the steak and egg breakfast, the Game On bacon cheeseburger, and the Norwegian, which comes with two fried eggs and smoked salmon on an English muffin, covered in Hollandaise sauce and hash browns.
Game On rolled out a limited version of the breakfast menu earlier this month.
Since opening, Mr Marshall said the biggest challenges had been gaining visibility and “figuring out the kinks”.
He said: “We have been slow getting everything off the ground. That is to be expected.”
He believes the concept that Game On is based on will grow on customers.
“It has a really different bar/arcade feel to it,” he said. “We have free games here for people to play, and lots of televisions so they can watch as much sports as they want. It is a versatile space in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.”
He said it was an opportunity to make use of the space that had been unoccupied for several years.
