MoneyGram customers can no longer collect from UK post offices
MoneyGram International has lost one of its most popular collection points in Britain, and that is upsetting some Bermuda customers.
The British post office cancelled its contract with the global firm on October 1.
One confused and outraged local MoneyGram user said: “Not everyone in the UK has a bank account. This is quite inconvenient, especially considering Bermuda is a British colony.”
The money transfer service has more than 50 million customers in over 350,000 locations worldwide, including the island.
On October 1, the relationship between the British post office and MoneyGram ruptured after a major cybersecurity incident in September.
A social engineering hack on MoneyGram offices overseas allowed bad actors to access customer personal data including names, contact information, and in some cases details related to fraud investigations. The international business is back online, but still determining which consumers were impacted.
Leila Wilson, owner of MoneyShop that runs the local MoneyGram service, said customers can still send money to Britain, but the pick-up point has changed.
“There are a list of other locations and MoneyGram branches that the money can be collected from,” Ms Wilson said. “It is just that for many people in the UK, picking it up from the post office was the most convenient option.”
She said it was just a matter of getting used to another collection place.
She declined to discuss the reasons for the UK post office pull-out.
