Deloitte staff deliver on Impact Day
Deloitte’s annual celebration of commitment to community investment in Bermuda, Impact Day, was held this month.
The staff set aside their work for a day to contribute towards the community-based initiative.
A total of 90 employees took part this year at six locations, aligning with Deloitte’s corporate responsibility pillars: youth, seniors, education and the environment.
Each site was hosted by a different non-profit, including Habitat for Humanity, The Bermuda Zoological Society, The Bermuda Audubon Society, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, St George’s Foundation and Waterstart.
Volunteers for the Bermuda Zoological Society met at Trunk Island where they worked on clearing invasive species and replanting.
Ian Walker, principal curator, said the annual event plays a pivotal role in advancing important conservation projects.
Keep Bermuda Beautiful hosted Deloitte for an East End beach clean up, starting the day with a tour of the recycling plant. Angel Smith, executive director, said the 13 staff members collected a total of 11 trash bags and 1 recycling bag.
Other staff spent the day with the Habitat for Humanity team, helping to restore and renovate a Devonshire home for a family in need.
Sheelagh Cooper, chair, commented how quickly the Deloitte team painted Habitat’s latest project.
She said: “It’s really quite amazing what a group of accountants can do - they are the best painters because they pay attention to detail.”
Phoebe Barboza-Bellamy, research and operations manager at Waterstart, said their accountant volunteers immersed themselves in the work needed at the Burt Island environmental hub. They cleared invasive species, painted buildings, watered young trees and assisted with shellfish counts in the restoration nets.
