Bermudian Shakeem Albouy has relocated from Axa XL in Bermuda to work as a cyber underwriter in the company’s Singapore office.

The company said Mr Albouy, 30, has seized opportunities afforded to him by Axa XL since starting there in September 2022 as a professional lines underwriter.

In 2023, he was recognised by The Bermudian magazine as a rising star, and in 2024, he was nominated in an independent survey conducted by the Bermuda Re+ILS publication as “as an industry rising star in Bermuda”.

Last year, he completed a secondment in Axa XL’s New York office where he spent one month with the underwriting cyber team.

The company said Mr Albouy initially worked in the hospitality industry but after exploring fintech courses and enrolling in the first full-stack web development course at Bermuda College, he realised he had a passion for technology and finding innovative solutions.

Mr Albouy said: “Little did I know that this passion would lead me to the fascinating world of data science, where I discovered the power of extracting meaningful insights from vast amounts of information.

“It was through this journey that I realised the immense value data science brings to the insurance industry, enabling us to make more informed decisions, improve efficiency, and ultimately provide better services to our clients.”

Mr Albouy believes young professionals find the insurance industry appealing due to the potential for financial independence and the opportunity to work with well-known global companies.

“It also provides potential for international relocation and clear pathways for career advancement, making it an ideal field for ambitious individuals seeking rapid professional growth and diverse experiences.”

Mr Albouy said what stands out to him at Axa XL is the company’s culture.

“I feel at home, surrounded by a supportive and cohesive community that encourages me to give my best every day.”

He added: “I am committed to becoming an executive at Axa XL, where I plan to mentor the next generation of underwriters while also leading technological initiatives to continually improve the underwriting process.”

Speaking of his motivation to succeed, Mr Albouy said: “I have a strong desire to do something unique and innovative, to push boundaries and accomplish what has never been done before.

“I also aim to be a role model for young men, particularly young Black men in my country, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and achieve success.”
