Retail sales see September dip

Retail sales volume in Bermuda dipped by 0.9 per cent year-over-year in September, according to Retail Sales Index figures released today by the Ministry of Economy and Labour.

That figure was determined after adjusting for the retail sales rate of inflation, which was measured at 2.3 per cent in September.

In value terms, retail sales increased to an estimated $100.7 million, which represented a 1.4 per cent growth in sales value year-to-year.

Four of the seven sectors recorded a year-over-year volume index increase in September 2024.

Food stores’ sales volume grew 1.8 per cent.

The sales volume for motor vehicle stores increased 0.6 per cent.

The service stations’ sales volume increased 1.1 per cent.

In the all other store types sector (comprising stores selling household items, furniture, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals and tourist-related goods), there was a 0.2 per cent growth in sales volume.

Liquor stores’ sales volume fell 10.3 per cent.

The sales volume for building material stores decreased 12 per cent.

The sales volume at apparel stores decreased 3.8 per cent.

Selected overseas declarations increased 38.3 per cent compared with September 2023.

Imports via courier increased $6.1 million to $16.5 million. This increase was attributed to the higher importations of printed books, newspapers, pictures, articles of apparel and clothing.

Imports by households via sea increased $1.5 million to $7.9 million.

Declarations at the airport by returning residents increased $0.4 million to $4.7 million.

Imports via the Bermuda Post Office increased $0.2 million to $0.5 million.

Excluding Sundays, there were 24 shopping days, one fewer than in September 2023.
