Hair transplant clients thrilled with new look

In the past five months, North Shore Medical Aesthetics Centre has carried out hair transplants on 24 people with the help of a visiting Turkish team of experts.

“The results we have seen have been impressive,” NMAC founder Kyjuan Brown said.

Client Carlos Frias is not shy about saying he had the procedure done five months ago to cover up a thinning patch.

“Someone said to me, people are going to know,” the 58-year-old said. “Who cares? If this is what you want, then do it. I recommend it 100 per cent. Dr Brown is amazing.”

When he learnt that NMAC was offering the transplants, he immediately texted Dr Brown and was able to see him the very next day.

“He had to check that I would be a good candidate for it,” Mr Frias said. “I felt like I looked old without hair. I had lost a lot in the front.”

He had enough hair on the back of his head to be transplanted to the front. The process took six hours.

“I sat in a chair the whole time,” he said. “They gave me two injections to numb the site. I did not feel any pain. I was able to watch the whole thing with a mirror that was set up. Some people could be made queasy by that but I was curious. I wanted to see what they were doing.”

He was particularly pleased that he did not miss any time off work.

“I was able to go to work the next day,” he said.

Right away, he received comments: “You look so much younger!”

After the hair transplant, the hair continues to grow. As soon as the transplant site heals, it can be washed, combed and cut as normal.

Mr Frias paid $3,500 for his treatment but the price varies depending on how much hair needs to be transplanted.

It is commonly done very cheaply in Turkey but Mr Frias felt he got a good price having it done here.

“If I went to Turkey, it would have been cheaper but I would also have had to pay for flights and accommodation and taken time off work,” he said. “Having it done here worked out to be much less expensive, in the end.”

Junior Vargas, 24, had the transplant done five months ago to lower his hairline.

“I was not balding,” he said. “I have always just had a high forehead.”

Before Dr Brown announced he was bringing the Turkish transplant team to Bermuda, Mr Vargas spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos about the procedure.

“I was excited when I heard it was going to be done here,” Mr Vargas said. “I just wanted to look better.”

The painter, originally from the Dominican Republic, thought his high forehead was probably inherited from his mother’s side of the family.

After the transplant people noticed that he looked different but could not quite pinpoint why.

“They just think I have a different haircut,” Mr Vargas said.
