Privacy Commissioner signs MOU with Philippines
Bermuda has signed a cross-border data agreement with the National Privacy Commission in the Philippines.
The action expanded the countries’ networks of international data partnerships to strengthen privacy protection.
The agreement was formalised through a memorandum of understanding signed on April 21 at the International Association of Privacy Professionals Global Privacy Summit 2025 in Washington.
The Privacy Commissioner of Bermuda, Alexander White, Philippines Privacy Commissioner John Henry Naga and Deputy Privacy Commissioner Nerissa De Jesus were at the signing.
Mr Naga said cross-border data transfers are fundamental to economic growth and international co-operation.
“This strategic partnership with PrivCom is a concrete step towards operationalising mutual accountability and enhancing enforcement co-operation on data protection,” he said in a statement.
The group agreed to swap information involving potential or continuing investigations related to suspected violations of data privacy laws. They also pledged to offer mutual assistance in facilitating such investigations in their respective locales.
According to the Unisys Security Index — which measures global consumer concerns related to national, personal, financial and internet security — Filipinos have some of the highest levels of concern about data privacy and internet security in the world.
