Richard Tucker featured in Essence magazine
A former Rosewood Tucker’s Point assistant manager has been recognised by Essence, the American magazine with a readership of 8.5 million.
Bermudian hotelier Richard Tucker, who is the general manager of the four-star Arlo Soho Hotel in Manhattan, New York, appears in this month’s issue dedicated to Black History Month.
In the article, headlined “Meet the Black general manager behind one of NYC’s coolest boutique hotels”, writer Kimberley Wilson said Mr Tucker is one of the few Black executives running a property in New York at this level.
Mr Tucker told Essence: “Early in my career I raised my hand for the unglamorous work, fixing broken processes, stabilising teams during transition and stepping into moments of discomfort.”
He said those experiences taught him how to listen deeply, lead through complexity, and balance the needs of people with the realities of the business.
He wanted to understand the financials as much as he understood the guest experience.
On his LinkedIn page, Mr Tucker said he was honoured to be included in the magazine for Black History Month.
“I had the opportunity to reflect on my journey in hospitality and what it means to lead with purpose, empathy and accountability,” he said.
He hoped his story resonated with others building their own leadership path.
The hotelier stepped into the role of GM at the 321-key boutique hotel two years ago.
Before that, he worked at the larger Arlo Midtown in New York as hotel manager.
According to the website Hospitalitynet.org, he was instrumental in shaping the Arlo Midtown’s identity as a leading New York City hospitality destination and experience. In addition to his operational responsibilities, he has also been active on the Arlo Hotels’ equity, diversity and inclusion committee and initiatives.
Early on in his career, Mr Tucker was assistant front office manager at Rosewood Tucker’s Point in Hamilton parish.
Responsible for the management of all aspects of the front desk department, he was selected as Rosewood Standards Specialist, responsible for ensuring standards were adhered to across the company.
