Jediah Cumbermack has been on the fast track to success since he started riding at the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club’s youth clinics at the Rubis Southside Raceway 18 months ago.

The 12-year-old, who is part of the Spark Programme for juniors aged 7 to 16, was crowned the club’s Minibike champion at their annual prize-giving after dominating the series this season.

Cumbermack had some prior motocross experience before joining the club and, with the beginner class full, was able to accelerate his development by jumping straight into the advanced clinic.

Deemed ready to put his skills to the test on the racetrack, Cumbermack took part in the final few races of the 2017 summer series and impressed with his effortless style and command of the bike.

He was then selected to join a group of ten local riders to visit California’s M1GP racetrack for their first international competition in April 2018, where he came second in his class. The next month he joined the BMRC’s race series where he proved himself as a fearless, competitive racer, forcing his peers to stay focused to have any chance of beating him.

With his consistency, and a visible ease on the racetrack, Cumbermack worked hard to secure his title win as the Minibike champion.

Kristin Divine, BMRC’s youth development chair, described Cumbermack as a “remarkably talented athlete” with a unique style of racing.

“It has been an honour to have him be part of the Spark family within the BMRC,” she said. “Every time he heads out of the pits to race, you can’t help but be fixed to watching him. His race style is unique; he dives into corners and competes with an edge that you don’t see in every rider.

“I am so proud to have watched him thrive within our programmes.

He has a tangible presence on the track — a captivating style that is actually quite artistic; something that may sound odd when discussing motorsports. But whatever that style is, Jediah has it.”

Cumbermack now plans to compete in the Scooter class as well.

“He is very excited to have his new bike, purchased from a fellow racer, and wishes to fix and make upgrades where possible,” said his mother, Patrina Cumbermack.

“His race-day regimen is still the same. He goes to bed early on Saturday and rises at 6am every Sunday. He doesn’t have that focus and drive even on school days. He loves racing!”
