Scott Barnes to take break from domestic racing after clinching 21st title
Scott Barnes further cemented his status as the island’s dominant force in karting after claiming two further national class titles.
At the conclusion of the Bermuda Karting Club National Championships at the weekend, Barnes was crowned the champion of both the L206 class with a total of 1118 points, ahead of David Selley (1019 points), and the Shifter Stock Class with 1022 points, edging out Ryan Burgess on 992 points.
Having taken his total tally to a record 21 titles, the 38-year-old has conceded he will now look to take a break from racing domestically but will continue to compete overseas.
“It’s really exciting to get two more titles under the belt,” Barnes said.
“The goal at the beginning of the season was to race in the 206 class as I was looking for that twentieth title, which was the main aim.
“I then got into the Shifters to get some time in the seat in preparation for the SuperNats in Las Vegas in November of last year, but found myself in the points chase, so I decided to continue racing to see if I could steal another title there.
“They both proved really close battles all season and they were definitely hard-fought victories; I really had to earn both of those titles.
“I’m really excited to have finally hit that goal of a twentieth Bermuda Karting Club National Championship title and also get a twenty-first in the process as well.
“Now is the time to step back for a year, take a break from racing in the Championship and then see what happens in the future.”
There was also delight for Stephen Corrado after he claimed the Tag Senior Class title with a total of 1057 points ahead of Jayden Brimmer with 880 points.
The Shifter KZ Class proved a close fought tussle with Blake Horseman ultimately crowned champion with 984 points, just eight clear of second-placed Ryan Rebello.
At the conclusion of the L206 Masters class there was nothing to separate Kenneth Harrison and Ed Cook, who were named joint winners with a total of 932 points. Jeff Sousa took third place with 571 points.
Roman Wilkinson won the Tag Junior Class with 956 points, finishing narrowly ahead of Jonah Moniz on 942 points, while Tanner Correia took the honours in the Cadet Class with 998 points. Syah Pedro finished second on 973 points.
