Mikayla Moore inspiring women to compete in motorcycle racing
Motorcycle racing is not a sport you would normally expect to find lots of women riders.
Mikayla Moore is determined to change all of that.
The 19-year-old American is adamant women can hold their own in the male-dominated sport and has the proof to back it up having already enjoyed considerable success on the track.
“I definitely hope to inspire other women in this sport as being a young woman in this sport is fun. Don't count yourself out because you're a female,” Moore told The Royal Gazette.
Asked if she considers herself a trailblazer, Moore added: “Yes, as I am able to represent women in this sport and show that women can ride and battle with the guys too.”
The teenage rider will be the star attraction during Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Association’s season finale at Southside Raceway on Sunday and is looking forward to showcasing her talents on the island for the first time.
“It is my first time coming here and also racing on an island, so I'm super excited,” Moore said.
The promising rider is also looking forward to living up to the high expectations of herself as the reigning champion of the Build Train Race Road Race Programme, designed to teach women to build and race their own motorcycles.
“Race fans can expect to see me perform with Bermuda's top racers and also showcase my skills,” Moore added.
“I was able to get seat time and I like the track. I'm used to riding on smaller tracks, so trying out Southside Raceway felt like some of the tracks back home.”
Moore will be accompanied by her father and coach, Will, who has been a major influence throughout her career, which began at age 6.
“My dad inspired me to race as he introduced me to this sport. I love what racing brings; the excitement, speed and adrenalin,” Moore said.
BMRA youth development co-ordinator Billy Dunn hopes Moore’s talents will both inspire and lure the island’s youngsters to the sport.
“We invited her because she is a champion and a young 19-year-old female that can be an inspiration to all children,” he said.
“We are expecting a good turnout and looking forward for people to come down the track and enjoy the racing and also meet Mikayla and Will Moore and watch them ride.”
Racing begins at 1pm.
