Trophy Day tribute to karting pioneer Maynard ‘Duke’ Soares

Strong showing: Scott Barnes, who finsihed second overall in the L206 Senior class and third in the Shifter KZ class

Brian Bulhoes, Jason North, David Barbosa and Tanner Correia were at their best to clinch titles at a special Trophy race day in honour of Maynard “Duke” Soares at Southside Raceway on Sunday.

The day was held in tribute to Soares, who was the founding president of the Bermuda Karting Club in 1976 and was one of the five visionaries behind its creation. He left an indelible mark on the Bermuda motorsports community.

All four drivers enjoyed flawless performances, with Bulhoes winning all three heats in the Tag Senior Class to beat Jason Correia, with William Dunkley rounding out the podium places.

North continued his superb form this season in the L206 Senior, holding off the challenge of Scott Barnes to come out on top of each race, with Marc Tucker claiming three successive third-place finishes.

It was much the same story for Tanner Correia in the Cadets class, as he beat Syash Pedro in all three races to take the top honours, with Ethan Wheatley finishing third in all three races.

David Barbosa proved the man to beat in the L206 Masters, taking the chequered flag in each race, with Matt Flynn finishing runner-up ahead of Richard Walker Talbot.

The Stock Shifter class proved more hard-fought with Shannon Caisey winning two of the three heats to come out on top ahead of Jason Correia and Cody Sousa-Saints.

There was a tough tussle in the Shifter KZ class with three different drivers picking up victories. However, it was Ryan Rebello who ultimately came out on top, with Blake Horseman settling for second and Barnes third.

Roman Wilkinson also impressed on the day, securing two wins out of three in the Junior class to triumph. Jonah Moniz, who won the second heat, finished second in the overall standings, with Lucas Flood taking the final place on the podium.
