‘It can only be described as a mud ballet’
The Bermuda Motocross Club season was disrupted over the weekend as heavy rainfall put paid to any competitive action at Southside Moto Sports Park on Sunday.
Although riders managed to get out on to the course for a number of practice laps, the decision was taken to postpone racing as a result of safety concerns over the track itself and after discussion with the St John's Ambulance team.
“Due to an intense downpour, the event took a rain check when the St John's Ambulance team could not make it to the starting line,” said Arlene Simmons, spokeswoman for the Bermuda Motocross Club.
“However, it was not just the absence of medics that put the brakes on the race.
“During what could only be described as a mud ballet, riders found themselves performing an unintended routine as bikes waltzed into the mud.
“Practice laps quickly turned into a squelchy spectacle, with more bikes christening the mud than clearing jumps.
“With safety gears clicking in their heads, the executive team decided that the race was better off postponed. After all, our racers are more accustomed to dirt tracks than doing the mudslide.”
Action is scheduled to resume on Sunday, weather permitting.
