Dominant Allan Degraff makes inroads in title defence
Allan Degraff made more inroads towards his title defence in the Expert class during Bermuda Motocross Association’s 52nd anniversary meeting at Bermuda Motorsports Park on Sunday.
On St John’s Ambulance Appreciation Day, the defending champion won all three heats in his division to close the gap on leader Zico Majors with four fixtures remaining in the season.
“It was a good race day yesterday. I got all three holeshots (first through first turn) and led all of the laps,” Degraff told The Royal Gazette.
“Zico gave me some pressure in all the motos but I prevailed. I just hit my marks and maintained my lead all three motos.
“Track conditions started off a little dry. We put some water down and then Mother Nature blessed us with some rain and wind.
“The rain was a blessing but the wind definitely impacted the jumping, but it was a good day.”
Degraff is equally as delighted to have made up precious ground in the overall championship series.
“I made up some good ground on the championship points because I had missed the first race in November,” he added.
“I have been cutting into the points lead and I think I am down to about 19 now.
“I just have to keep doing what I am doing and by end of season if I continue to beat Zico then I should become the champion again, God willing staying healthy and no bike issues.
“I’ve made up about 20 points since I’ve been back so it was a good day pointswise as well.”
Degraff was among seven riders achieving a clean sweep of victories in their respective classes.
Lorenzo Burch won all three heats in the Over 30 class, A'Jahni Foggo in the 85cc class, Ahlierre Belloquet in the Ladies 85cc class, Mazaii Tucker in the 65cc class, Aiden Simmons in the Novice class and Ade Stovell in the Pee Wee class.
King Clarke was the day’s other big winner after taking top spot on the podium in the 50cc class.
BMA president Gannon Trott was impressed by the level of skill demonstrated by the riders on their return to racing following a four week hiatus owing to inclement weather.
“While we had such a long hiatus from racing due to Mother Nature, you would not have guessed that from the high calibre of racing we experienced in each class and every moto,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“We had a very successful day and want to thank the individuals who took the time to come and support us. “We especially give a great big thank you to St John's Ambulance for without them there will be no racing.
“For those that could not make it Sunday gone, don't worry you will have another opportunity to see some action this Sunday, and we look forward to having you.”
