Powerboat racers up for Hamilton Harbour Race
Powerboat racing returns to Hamilton Harbour tomorrow where competitors will showcase their talents in the Island’s capital as they attempt to make further inroads in their quest for national bragging rights.
The Bermuda Power Boat Association is staging the Hamilton Harbour Race being held in conjunction with Scooter Mart Motor Fest on Front Street featuring teams in various classes that will compete in two 20-minute heats for vital points to count towards the BPBA National Championship Series.
“We are going to be running in conjunction with Scooter Mart Motor Fest and we are expecting a great day, great turnout,” Janae Nesbitt, BPBA commodore, told The Royal Gazette. “The weather is supposed to be good for that day as well.”
Nesbitt said the competitors are all up for the big occasion.
“I have a special entry that's supposed to be coming for Sunday that hasn't raced all season, and they came because obviously they wanted to race the Hamilton Harbour Race,” she added.
“It’s a special course and two races to go towards our national entities in points.
“The drivers seem quite excited about the day, the event and being able to display their driving skills.”
Teams have added incentive to put their best foot forward showcasing their talents in front of the large crowd anticipated to attend tomorrow’s annual event.
“Last year we had a great turnout but obviously we are also getting our spectators from the event that’s going on Front Street, so it’s a whole bunch of activity and events that’s happening during the day,” Nesbitt said.
“I think last year the projection was like 800 people, so I would say it’s gong to be a couple of hundred people that’s going to be on Front Street for the event.”
The boating public have been urged to be aware racing will be taking place in Hamilton Harbour and to be mindful of the racers travelling at high speeds in the vicinity.
The two races will be held at 1.45pm and 2.45pm with staggered starts and will be preceded by three races featuring drivers from the BPBA junior programme, that will kick proceedings off at noon.
