Powerboat racing set to heat up at Ferry Reach
Shaki Easton will renew his rivalry with Steven Mireles in a closely fought battle for the National Championship and Season Points Series titles when powerboat racing resumes at Ferry Reach tomorrow.
The two drivers are tied for first in each competition in the D class heading into the scheduled two races, which will see points earned go towards the Season Points Series.
“It's been a fun season racing against Pointy [Mireles] and everyone else,” Easton told The Royal Gazette.
“We’ve had a few mishaps, but to be in the running in this boat we still have a lot of work to do, which, I guess is an accomplishment in itself already.”
Easton is grateful to be back in action after being involved in a crash with rival driver Patrick Stamper in a National Championship Series race in the Great Sound last season.
“My steering broke and my boat went into another boat (Stamper), so we had to spend thousands of dollars to get new steering, and my sponsors Harbourside Marine, On Course Contracting, North Point Contracting and Code Limited chipped in big time to get me out there,” he explained.
“Without them this season, I would not be on the track. They have helped me out tremendously this year to get me out there.”
Meanwhile, all eyes will also be on another intriguing battle shaping up between A class National Championship and Season Points Series leader Shane Madeiros and rival driver Chris Marshall, the former multiple world and United States national champion.
“We are trying to do what we always do, stay out in front, which is the name of the game,” Madeiros said. “We lost a bit of speed in the town race [Hamilton Harbour Race held in conjunction with Scooter Mart Motor Fest].
“We are trying to rectify that this weekend before we get down there and we’ll see what happens to continue that points lead hopefully.”
Madeiros leads the National Championship Series by ten points and Season Points Series by 20 over experienced campaigner Marshall, who has made a comeback to the sport at age 68.
Andrew Cottingham leads the Season Points Series by 110 points ahead of Aaron Sims, but trails his S class rival by ten points in the National Championship Series.
Reigning BV class National Championship and Season Points Series champion Brandon DeSilva is the sole entry in his class as is C class driver Quince’ Dowling.
Racing gets under way at Ferry Reach tomorrow at 1.30pm. The National Championship Series resumes on September 8.
