Bridges and Selley battle to top-five showing in Indiana
Steven Bridges and David Selley overcame an early setback to finish fifth in the Super Stock class on their debut at the Michigan City Race in Indiana at the weekend.
The Bermudian pair found themselves at a disadvantage right from the start, but managed to claw their way back and secure a third top-five finish of the year competing in the Offshore Powerboat Association Great Lakes Grand Prix.
“The pace boat caused a bad start for the fleet and the association changed how the class would start, so it caused some confusion,” boat owner and throttle man Bridges told The Royal Gazette.
“We had a great hook with Northwing and S2 powerboats for several laps for third, fourth and fifth, but ended up with fifth.
“First time racing this event, so it’s a good experience and it’s always a positive at every race learning the boat, freshwater conditions and set-ups.
“The boat ran smoothly but it was just hard to overtake when boats are running defence.
“The conditions were good. From what everyone says, it was one of the calmest races at this event, but there were some swells out there.”
Bridges was accompanied by pilot David Selley in the local team’s 32-foot twin-engined catamaran, S25 Team Bermuda/GL Construction.
The duo started the season with a bang in May, finishing runner-up in their class at the American Powerboat Association Offshore National Series season opener in Key West, Florida.
They also impressed on the way to finishing fourth on their debut at the Thunder on Cocoa Beach offshore races in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
