Karting community honours Duke Soares at Memorial Cup
While most eyes were on the return of motocross at Coney Island on Sunday, the karting community was focused on its own big day.
The Duke Soares Memorial Cup, held in memory of the founder of the Bermuda Karting Club, was held at Southside with some competitive action taking place in four classes.
The biggest turnout of the day came in the L206 class with 15 karters attempting to get their hands on the first prize after competing in three races. It was Marc Tucker who came out on top after winning heats two and three following a fourth-placed finish in the opening contest.
Tucker finished ahead of Brian Bulhoes, who secured the runner-up spot after crossing the line victorious in heat one and finishing second in race two, but he blotted his scoreboard by finishing only eleventh in the final race. David Barbosa rounded out the podium, with his best finish of second coming in the last event.
While Bulhoes could not quite make it to the top rung on the podium in the L206 class, he produced a dominant display in the Tag division, winning all three races to finish with a perfect record. He beat Roman Wilkinson, who finished third on a couple of occasions and second in heat three. Tucker finished third despite finishing heat one in last place.
Syah Pedro matched Bulhoes’s dominance when winning all three heats for victory in the Junior class to outgun Ethan Wheatley and Hunter Borland.
There was more perfection from Blake Horseman, who won all three heats in the Shifter class. Horseman beat Ryan Rebello, who did not finish out of the first four in any race, with his best effort coming when second in the finale. Stephen Corrado finished third overall.
In the cadet class, Tanner Correia, aged just nine, finished with a 100 per cent record to take top honours, with Jonathan Linberg and Jacob Garrett finishing second and third respectively.
