RBR CO: New recruits ’some of the best of Bermuda’
The Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment yesterday paid tribute to the newest recruits to volunteer for the service.
Lieutenant-Colonel Ben Beasley said: "These recruits represent some of the best of Bermuda.
“In a challenging time with competing priorities they have decided to put the needs of others before their own.”
He was speaking as the 36 rookie troops, who range in age from 18 to 45, prepared to finish a 12-day Recruit Camp tomorrow.
After basic orientation and weapons training last week, recruits were taught camouflage and concealment and patrol and sentry skills on Monday before they headed to the 32-acre Hog Bay Park in Sandys for their first night out in the field.
Lieutenant Samuel Hewitt, the platoon commander for Recruit Camp, said the fieldcraft exercise taught the recruits a variety of fundamental skills that they will use throughout their military career.
Colonel Beasley, the RBR Commanding Officer, said the recruits will benefit from their time in the service.
He said: “Military life makes you more physically and mentally robust, and some of these trainees are experiencing that first hand.
“What they found difficult a week ago they now do with such ease they are making jokes with each other – having fun is a key ingredient to being a soldier.”
Colonel Beasley added: “Although we are selective about who enlists, we are always willing to provide more information to those who are simply thinking about it.
“For those who choose to serve they enjoy a lifestyle that no one else in Bermuda will experience.
“Travel, good pay, adventure training, and shooting competitions are just some of the benefits you receive whilst serving your country with some of the most dependable people in the country."
