Panel to discuss safety of 5G telecoms technology
A pressure group is to present a live public forum tonight (TUES) featuring international experts on the use of controversial 5G telecommunications technology.
The forum, organised by the Bermuda Advocates for Safe Technology and hosted by Eugene Dean, the chairman of environmental charity Greenrock, will be broadcast live on ZBM and Channel 82.
The coalition said that the introduction of 5G – the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks – would put “profit over people” and potentially expose the public to “a substantial increase in wireless radiation”.
Bast and Greenrock also raised concerns last week about a lack of representation of health and environmental experts on an advisory panel that will make recommendations to the Regulatory Authority on the suitability of 5G broadband.
They said the panel was weighted with industry professionals.
The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda last month announced an extension of a public consultation deadline over the introduction of 5G in Bermuda from November 23 to December 7.
Bast is a community advocate group founded in 2018 consisting of teachers, healthcare professionals, business professionals and environmentalists. Its mission is to educate the community and policymakers on the dangers of exposure to unsafe levels of radiation from technology.
Members of the public can post questions through the online channels for presentation to the panel of Bermudian and international professionals.
The panel line-up includes Paul Héroux, a scientist with 15 years experience in physics, engineering and the health sciences, Theodora Scarato, a director of US think tank Environmental Health Trust’s programmes and coordinator of scientific programmes in the US and internationally, as well as Camilla MacPherson, a co-founder of Bast.
David Wingate, a Bermudian ornithologist, naturalist and conservationist, David Chapman, an author, explorer, science lecturer and natural living expert, Ayesha Peets Talbot, a doctor, and Frank Clegg, a former president of Microsoft Canada, will also take part.
A special guest, Dr. Devra Davis, will also present a pre-recorded video. A renowned academic and climate change researcher, she is the founder of the non-profit Environmental Health Trust in 2007 in Teton County, Wyoming which provides basic research and education about environmental health hazards and promote constructive policies locally, nationally and internationally.
The forum will start at 8pm.
It will also be streamed live on www.bast.bm, the BAST Facebook page, the Channel 82 Facebook page and the Channel 82 YouTube Channel.
