Premier meets UAE foreign trade minister
David Burt, the Premier, has met the Minister of State for Foreign Trade for the United Arab Emirates to discuss how Bermuda can strengthen ties with the country.
Mr Burt and Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier, travelled to the UAE for the United Nations COP28.
The Premier posted on X yesterday that he had met Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi to talk about how a relationship could be built through “economic co-operation and investment opportunities in hospitality and infrastructure”.
The post was accompanied by icons of the flags of Bermuda and the UAE.
According to the UAE Ministry of Economy website, Dr Zeyoudi was appointed as Minister of State for Foreign Trade in July 2020 and was “assigned a file to attract the best talents and competencies to serve the strategic direction of the UAE”.
It adds: “His Excellency also oversees the development of non-oil foreign trade sectors and the expansion of global partnerships, in addition to enhancing the investment climate in the country, in order to cement its position as a major business destination at the regional and global levels.”
Previously, Dr Zeyoudi held the position of Minister of Climate Change and Environment. He also served as the permanent representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency and director of the Department of Energy Affairs and Climate Change at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation.
Mr Roban featured in a ministerial panel discussion at COP28 overnight titled “On the Frontline”. The panel discussed how British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies will achieve net zero and adapt to and deal with the effects of climate change.
The discussion took place at 12.45am Bermuda time and highlighted the impact of climate change on small-island territories, the progress they are making and challenges being faced in meeting net zero.

The panel was chaired by Graham Stuart, Britain’s Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
Previously, Mr Stuart was the Minister of State at the Foreign Office.
The Premier also participated in regional economic events while in Dubai.
He returned to Bermuda yesterday, while Mr Roban returns to the island on Sunday.
