A tropical depression has strengthened into the third tropical storm of the hurricane season.

At midnight, Tropical Storm Cindy was 1,562 nautical miles to the southeast of Bermuda.

It is heading in a west-northwesterly direction towards Bermuda but is expected to weaken over the weekend and is not viewed as a threat to the island.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service, the closest point of approach to Bermuda within the next three days is forecast to be 683 nautical miles to the southeast on Monday morning.

However, this system may move closer to Bermuda later next week depending on its track.
