Monica Berry (1930-2024): lifelong nurse
A nurse with a lifelong commitment to healthcare left “a lasting impact on countless lives”, her family said.
Monica Berry worked more than 40 years at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, and was a keen member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club with her late husband, Charles, who died in 1997.
The Berry family tribute added: “Her legacy is one of compassion, dedication and vibrant engagement with life.”
Ms Berry qualified and worked as a registered nurse in Northern Ireland and England before she moved to Bermuda in 1955, taking up work as a staff nurse at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Her duties there included the children's ward as well as the Curtis and Gosling wards.
Ms Berry retired in 1996 and went to work at the Westmeath Residential and Nursing Care Home for several years.
She was said to be a proud member of the Royal College of Nursing in London along with the Bermuda Registered Nurses Association, with an “unwavering” commitment to healthcare that included serving with the Bermuda Red Cross.
Ms Berry’s compassion included animals, and she was a keen supporter of the Bermuda SPCA.
Along with her husband, a sailor, she was closely involved in yachting in Bermuda.
Ms Berry belonged to the Bermuda Garden Club and was a practitioner of ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement.
She graduated from an advanced course at the Ohara School of Ikebana in Japan, and attended several overseas conferences along with two world congresses.
Ms Berry was also a life member of the Bermuda College Seniors Learning Centre.
She returned to live in England in 2010.
A memorial service for Ms Berry is planned for 4pm on April 4 at Christ Church in Warwick, followed by a reception at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club from 5pm until 7.30pm.
