Transfer market's heating up
With merely two and a half months left in the transfer window things are already starting to heat up. Talk of players and even coaches moving from one club to another is already in the air. Clubs are wheeling and dealing to try and bolster their team for the upcoming season. March 31 is the deadline in what could be one of the busiest transfer seasons we have had in ages. Welcome to the cricket rumour mill this week. Before I get into discussing the possible player moves the big news in cricket right now is that Wendell Smith, former St.George’s captain and coach, could be lured back into coaching by neighbours St.David’s.Many of you would remember Wendell from his glory days playing and coaching St.George’s when he helped transform St.George’s Cricket Club into a cricket powerhouse, thus dominating cricket in the late 1980”s to mid 1990’s. Better known for his tactical ability and his professional approach Wendell’s coaching experience would be a great acquisition to any team let alone a star-studded team like St.David’s.Herbie Bascome (Devonshire Rec.) apparently has also thrown his name into the hat for the St.David’s coaching job so now it is decision time for St.David’s.On to the transfers - One thing that does look certain is that Dean Stevens and Ricardo Brangman of PHC look to be heading back home to Devonshire Recreation Club. Rec would gladly welcome these two back home as they earned a wild card to remain in the Premier Division thanks to a last minute decision by the Cricket Board of demoting one team instead of two. Devonshire Rec would want to make sure that they are not in that same position this season and with the return of these two they could possibly transform into a top four team.Down in the east at St.George’s there is massive talk about two senior players possibly on the move. Devonshire Rec. appear to be seeking the services of James Celestine, but St.George’s will hope that he stays, as James was very instrumental in helping them get promoted. His explosive batting style is a major threat to teams, and St.George’s would benefit from having his experience in the top flight. The other senior player St.George’s look to keep on the books is former Bermuda national player Ryan Steede. Steede has been a long serving member in the St.George’s team, but has had a brief stint at Bailey’s Bay recently before returning home. It seems as though Bailey’s Bay are trying to lure him back so that he can play Eastern Counties. The big question is would Steede prefer to win Eastern County with Bay or a major trophy with his life long team St.George’s?Across the way at rival club St.David’s they face a tricky final two months in the transfer. Normally St.Davids players are very loyal to their club, but word has it there could be an exodus of 2-3 players. In past seasons Sammy Robinson is one name that always seemed to get mentioned about possibly moving on, but this year the talk is that Justin Pitcher, Tamauri Tucker, and possibly even Lauren Marshall could seek alternative teams. This puts even more pressure on management in ensuring that they put the right man in charge of coaching, as that person will be instrumental in retaining and securing their top players. At the other end of the island things are just as interesting as Jacobi Robinson who continues to fight his knee troubles, looks almost certain to be replaced as Somerset’s league and Cup Match captain. If this materialises word has it that Robinson is looking at league champions Southampton Rangers as an option. Securing Jacobi will automatically make Rangers favourites to retain the league title for yet another season. One club wishing and hoping the transfer season ends without any major losses is Willow Cuts. Having finished fourth last year they will look to retain the services of the big three Chris Douglas, George O’Brien and Malachi Jones. Could St.David’s lure back two of their top players in the off-season as they look to muscle the title away from Rangers? Only time will tell!Slightly down the road at PHC they could find this a rough season after such a promising one last year. With news that the two Devonshire boys are almost definitely heading home brings the fear that there could be a mass exodus of their outside players. Will Jason Anderson and Fiqre Crockwell stay? PHC will look to at least secure these two players if Stevens and Brangman definitely make their move. Losing all four spells disaster for PHC forcing relegation to stare them in the face.In the town area Social Club have rebounded and climbed their way back into the top flight. In their previous stint in Premiership they secured an abundance of new players, but since which most have moved on and returned to their regular clubs. The question is do they still have the luring power that they once had? Rodney Trott who is captain/coach will know he has to find at least two or three new additions and one player comes to mind. There was no secret last year that Trott endeavoured to lure Tamauri Tucker to Social Club before Tucker decided to join St.David’s. However, after being rarely used at St.David’s last year Trott could possibly land his man and if he does Trott and Tucker could form a deadly spin combination.Heading back towards the east to Bailey’s Bay. There doesn’t appear that too much is going on here.As already stated, Bay are looking to secure Ryan Steede to add more experience to their bowling attack. Glenn Blakeney is one player that any club would benefit from having in their team and rumour has it that he could be on the move to one of the East End clubs, either St.George’s or St.David’s, preferably St.George’s.As you can see there are many discussions going on behind the scenes and there are surely more to come as clubs look to strengthen their teams. The information shared is talk amongst cricketers and fans in and around the clubs. We won’t know for certain who does what until March 31 deadline day. This season is shaping up to be a positive and promising one. I urge the clubs, the Cricket Board, groundsmen and anyone else affiliated with cricket to start preparing now. Let’s have the cricket schedule out a month before the season this year. Let’s have the wickets ready by the end of April this year. Let’s play more cricket this year.We all have a part to play in producing a quality cricket season and I wish all the clubs the best in their preparations and in the transfer market as the deadline quickly approaches.
