Season shaping up for exciting finish
February is almost over and as we move into the last month of football, excitement is in the air.Teams are juggling for position for the title and to stay out of the relegation zone and every point right now is crucial. One of three teams, North Village, Dandy Town and PHC are in the running to win the league, while St.David’s, Somerset Eagles, Southampton Rangers are battling it out to avoid the drop alongside Devonshire Colts. The month of March is shaping up to be the best part of the 2010/2011 season.North Village have been the most consistent team around and deserve to win the league, but PHC and Dandy Town will be trying to take them to the wire, waiting to pounce at any slip up.St David’s meanwhile are hoping to be the ones that cause the slip in a week’s time, because three points is a valuable commodity for them at this stage of the game. However, North Village have beaten them twice this season and scored seven goals against them in both games. It is almost a formality that Village will be up for the task again and win comfortably. Both PHC and Dandy Town will be hoping that St.David’s pull off the upset as the two are fitted to play each other, and a win for either one of them will set them up to close the gap on Village. In the middle of the pack St.George’s, Boulevard and Devonshire Cougars appear to be just jockeying for position. St.George’s have been the surprise team of the season taking points from every side except Dandy Town. With the Friendship semi-final coming up they will want to get back to their winning ways before they face Devonshire Cougars on March 9.Cougars have been more of a cup team than a league team this year, already in the FA Cup semi-finals, they play St.George’s for a place in the Friendship finals. This year hasn’t been one of their better in the league, but they are almost a sure bet to win a piece of silverware.Boulevard, have recently earned valuable points to keep them from the relegation battle. While many thought they would struggle to stay in the top flight it has been proven that their fighting spirit has kept them afloat. That fighting spirit is also a characteristic that St David’s have and they will give it their all to remain in the Premier Division. One more win would all but assure them of another year of top-flight football.Somerset Bridge and Southampton Rangers are both trying to catch St David’s to avoid the dreaded drop. March 6 is a date when one of them could make great strides towards safety as they go head to head. This fixture could end up being the most important game for both teams this season. At the foot of the table and Devonshire Colts are already relegated. This has surprised me to be honest as I thought they would have put up much more of a fight.Going back to the 90’s Devonshire are a team with a history of fighting all the way to the end, but this team doesn’t seem to have the tenacity that most Colts teams have.Going down may not be a bad thing, as it will give them time to groom some youth and return in a year or two with the quality and fight that they are accustomed to.That’s the Premier League, but the First Division is just as exciting as there are four teams who are battling for promotion.Somerset Trojans appear to be favourites as Dennis Brown has his young team firing on all cylinders. One thing I must mention is the strength of Somerset’s youth programme.Hard work at that level has been a priority of theirs and it was just a matter of time before they reaped the rewards of mentoring and grooming their youth. For that second promotion spot, Robin Hood are my pick. Under the careful eye of Andrew Bascome, they sit in second place tied on points with MR Onions and X-Roads, but have a game in hand on both teams.Onions have the toughest road as they must face all of the top teams in the final stretch - Somerset, Robin Hood and X-Roads, thus making promotion for them very difficult.X-Roads on the other hand look to have the easiest home stretch of the three teams vying for that second promotion spot. If they can win against Onions they will push Robin Hood all the way to the end. That fixture on March 6th will decide whether they are the real deal and up for the challenges in the Premier League. As you can see there is much to play for in both leagues. March will be an interesting month and depending on one or two results promotion and relegation could go right down to the wire. Good Luck!
