Fitting finale for World Cup legends
The Cricket World Cup final is set, but this final is way bigger than India v Sri Lanka. This final is about which cricketer will go down in history as the best player ever. Will it be the batsman, “The Little Master” Sachin Tendulkar or the bowler “The Wizard” Muttiah Muralitheran?Only time will tell but this added incentive will only make for a more intriguing final.Tendulkar has dominated the World Cup like no other batsman, having scored six hundreds and 15 fifties. He has a total of 2,260 runs at an average of 57.94 with a high score of 152 runs. The next player closet to Tendulkar is Ricky Ponting who has over 500 runs less than “The Little Master”.Muralitheran currently has 68 wickets, only three shy of the great Glenn McGrath. So mesmerising is he that his economy rate for a spinner is phenomenal as he only gives up on average 3.86 runs per over.It would only be fitting to see him get four wickets in the final to become the top bowler of all times in the World Cup.While all the focus of records and stats thus far have been based on World Cup cricket alone these two geniuses, if I may call them that, have been terrorising fellow cricketers for years and years.Amazingly, both great phenomenons are bowing out at the same time and who would have dreamed that as host countries both of their teams would make it to the final.I have personally seen how the Indians treat or respect Tendulkar.Last World Cup while in Trinidad a fan held up a sign that said, “There is God and than there is Tendulkar”. That is how highly they rate and respect him in India. This final will be like no other as you have two world class players battling for supremacy.Tendulkar and Muri have dominated cricket for the last two decades and it has all come down to this. Sri Lanka last won the World Cup in 1996, while India have waited even longer as they haven’t won it since 1983.For one of these two it will be icing on the cake while for the other it will be a tough pill to swallow, knowing they were that close to winning the World Cup upon retirement. The battle between these two is certainly bigger than just this World Cup as both cricketers have dominated their respective areas of cricket from the beginning of their careers. Tendulkar has the most runs ever in Test cricket, more than the great Brian Lara, totalling a massive 14,962. He also holds the record for being the only batsmen ever to score 200 runs in a 50-over one-day international.Muri on the other hand has been just as dominant with the ball having become the only bowler ever to claim 800 wickets in Test cricket, some 92 more than the great Aussie Shane Warne. He also holds the record for the most wickets in one-day cricket, a massive 534.So destructive is Muri that cricket analysts requested his action for his famous “Doosra” ball be checked for chucking. This famous ball is virtually unplayable and has terrorised all batsmen including Tendulkar.Sri Lanka as a team are at the top of their game, crushing England in the quarters and then easily cruising past New Zealand in the semis.India equally dismantled former world champions Australia in the quarters and then defeated a very tough Pakistan team in the semis. This sets us up for a mouth watering final. My heart tells me India are too strong for Sri Lanka but there is something about this particular Sri Lanka team that I just love.Coincidentally just like the two greatest players, in my opinion, India are the stronger batting team and Sri Lanka are the stronger bowling team. However, both teams on the field are well balanced but at the end of the day only one team can win.At the beginning of this tournament I made a prediction that India would win the World Cup as they just seemed like the complete package at the time but I will go against what my heart is telling me and pick Sri Lanka to win it all.If there is one main factor that could separate the two teams it would be which team fields better on the day and for me Sri Lanka are by far the better fielding team.Regardless of the outcome you can be sure that this will be a thrilling final played by two very good teams with two very outstanding players.Lastly my All-Star team for this World Cup is as follows: Sachin Tendulkar, Tilakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakara, Jonathan Trott, Ross Taylor, Yuvraj Singh, Shahid Afridi, Ajantha Mendis, Muttiah Murilitheran, Zaheer Khan, Tim SoutheeQuote of the week: To give yourself the best possible chance of playing to your potential, you must prepare for every eventuality. That means practice Seve Ballesteros.
