This week a very close and prominent person in my family passed. Whilst I am very close to my own parents and have tried my best to prepare myself for that day when the Lord calls them home to Glory, nothing can prepare you for the passing of one’s parents or loved ones. So the moral of the story is that we should use our best efforts to spend as much time as possible with those we love. Because you just never know when your time or their time may be up. New at #20 is ET by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West. Now back to this week’s word: Spending as much time as possible with our loved ones. Life can be very complicated. But sometimes we make it more complicated than we need to make it. We often have our priorities in the wrong order. But that’s OK because we are only human, born to make mistakes. If you ask a person on their death bed who only has maybe a day to live what they want to do for their last day, where they want to be, and who they want to see/spend time with, their answer will tell you what’s important to them, who their loved ones are and the order of their priorities. If we ask ourselves those same questions whilst we are still alive our answers will confirm what’s important to us, who our loved ones are and the order of our priorities. Then we can amend our time spent to match our priorities, in terms of people and activities. Then, when we or anyone dear to us passes, we will have far fewer regrets than if we don’t reorder our lives and steps as is here being proposed. We fail to do this to our own regret and disappointment. But we have nobody to blame because life is about choices and consequences. For example, if we know that we really should be spending more time with our kids yet choose not to spend time with them the consequence is that they will not have strong bonds, relationships, ties, concern or care for us. This is a proven fact. But many people time and time again ignore their kids and expect adult children to come around and want to spend time with them when for 30 years they didn’t make time for the kid. It’s like most of us only become sensible and wise when we’re very old or have spent the best years of our lives on things that were not and should not have been our priorities. And for the record, we are all guilty of this; present company included! So my advice is that we should all reorder and simplify our lives. Understand that it is not about money. Yes, we are in a recession but we can simply do without the luxuries which we’ve all come to expect and desire. Even in a recession we Bermudians need to have our four trips per year. And these are not trips for funerals or to visit loved ones, we’re talking about trips to New Jersey for shopping! Most importantly, we should be spending as much time as we can manage with the people who matter most to us, in the places that are dearest to us and involved in activities that mean the most to us. All the other stuff that is lower on the list of priorities just doesn’t matter as much.We should do this so that when we or a loved one passes nobody has regrets. Then and only then can we all be at peace..….....……DJLT.
