Glory, glory, Man United
For those Manchester United fans, of which I am one, I am sure you sat in awe this past weekend watching them crucify Chelsea from the first minute of the game to the 90th.This win has moved United to within one point of winning a record 19th league title. Currently, United are tied with rivals Liverpool having both won 18 titles. Winning this title should be the sweetest of them all for a few reasons.Firstly, at the beginning of the season Manchester United lost Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez to bitter rivals Manchester City. Many around the world, and even some United fans, thought this was the start of their demise.Come on, let’s face it, selling your best two players, who are both goal scorers was always going to make winning difficult. One would have thought Alex Ferguson would have gone out and splurged on a big name striker, but he didn’t. In fact he spent six million on a relatively unknown and unproven striker at that level in the name of Javier Chicharito Hernandez, who has certainly proven his worth. It seems as though with the loss of Ronaldo and Tevez it sparked a united front for the club’s players to work together as a team, proving that when there is unity anything is possible. The match against Chelsea required everyone to step up their game as Chelsea were just as hungry as United for the league title. On this day the United players would not disappoint their fans as they dominated the game from beginning to end, thus emphasizing why they are about to be crowned champions of the Premier League.During the season one player in particular proved his worth, and that is none other then Dimitar Berbatov, who is currently the league’s leading goal scorer with 21 goals, a sure shoe-in for the golden boot at the end of this season.Personally speaking as a fan from way back in the Bryan Robson days I too had my doubts and was very skeptical about what we could accomplish this season. Looking at our squad I felt that this year if we finished in the top three it would be a great accomplishment after not really spending money on any top players in the summer transfer window.I guess that is why Ferguson is referred to as a genius in the football world. He can work with what he has and be able to spot talent before many others can.At the start of the season Chelsea took off out of the blocks quick and it looked like they were ready to run away with the league, but then injuries crept in and they started to play some of the top teams and all of a sudden you saw a weakness in Chelsea.United too suffered an early setback when Antonio Valencia got injured and would be out for months. So good was Chelsea’s start that even Wayne Rooney had doubts about his teammates ability, evidenced by the rumors that he was contemplating jumping ship. However, after much discussion with Sir Alex, Rooney squashed all rumors and signed an extended contract showing his trust and loyalty to United.Being on the brink of a record breaking 19th league title is a significant accomplishment in that years ago this seemed impossible. United’s dominance in English football over the last two decades is a feat to be proud of.Since the 1992/1993 season United have won the Premier League 11 times and if successful this year it would make it 12. To the Manchester United fans, players, coaches and executive, this year’s league title trophy will be icing on the cake. To surpass the once mighty, invincible, Liverpool who previously held the record of 18 titles is a mammoth accomplishment. When looking at this team I can honestly say there are really no “superstars”. What United do have is a winning mentality and a hunger for success. They fight for each other. They are united, and ultimately they work and appreciate one another. There is a good balance of youth and experience. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdidand complement each other, and are without a doubt, the best centre back pairing in the world. The dynamic duo of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in the midfield adds stability to our more youthful, aggressive, skilful, younger players. In attack Rooney, Berbatov, and Hernandez have shared the load.In essence even the bench has to be recognized as when they came on for others the team didn’t miss a beat. Now after United look to clinch the league title this weekend we will gear all of our energy towards Barcelona as it will take a gigantic effort to defeat them.I can see my mate Kenny Thompson now smiling saying ‘not a chance’, but it is games like this that Manchester United thrive on. Sir Alex Ferguson will mastermind a strategy to humble Barcelona. I predict that this final will go down as one of the greatest games ever because trust me Manchester United will play to win. They are not afraid of the likes of Messi, Xavi, or Iniesta. Manchester United only play football one way, and that is to win.I strongly believe that if Ferguson wins the Premier League and the Champions League he will retire on top and “The Special One” Jose Mourinho will take over as coach of Manchester United.Only time will tell! At the end of the day all Manchester United fans will say that this has already been a good year and it can only get better.Already there has been massive talk of United signing several players during the summer, Alex Sanchez, Ashley Young, Wesley Sneijder, Gareth Bale, Manuel Neuer, just to name a few. However, United have shown that they do not need superstars to be successful. What they need, and want, are team players who are willing to give their all on the field of play and play football the United way.United have earned the title of the best team in England and I look forward to seeing them beat Barcelona to earn the title as the best team in the world.
