Women's World Cup well worth watching
One tournament finishes another one starts. It seems like football has been going on continuously for the past year or more.Since the domestic football finished we’ve had the Under-17s World Cup, the Women’s World Cup and the Copa America is getting ready to start this weekend.I’ve actually been watching some of the Women’s World Cup and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen so far. I saw the first game between Canada and Germany, I saw the USA play, there are some good teams in the tournament. What’s really impressed me about it is the way the teams knock the ball around and the crowds. I mean, I think there was 75,000 people watching and that was unheard of in the past. It’s nice to see them get that sort of support. The women’s game has really taken off over the past decade and countries now have strong domestic leagues for the women to play in.Unfortunately, we don’t have that in Bermuda, which is one of the reasons that our girls are going to find playing in the Olympic qualifiers really, really tough. If you don’t have a league for the girls to in on a regular basis then it’s going to be hard for them to compete overseas. We have to think seriously about trying to get a competitive league going here. If we can’t get such a league organised, then we probably have to do something like the Hogges where they could be playing competitive games week in, week out.You just can’t pick up and say ‘hey, you wanna go play in the Olympics’, because it could be very embarrasing.I know we have some very good young players at the women’s level and I’ve seen that, especially at Somerset. Their team have been very, very good and I know PHC have had some good women’s teams, but they’ve got to be playing on a regular basis. But even if you beat teams here, playing against sides in the States is a different story. Their women have been competing so much longer than us and, believe me, they can play. However, women’s football is likely to have to take back seat now as the Copa America is about to start and I think it’s going to be another exciting competition which any one of three or four teams could win.You never can out count Brazil. They’ve got all of these exciting young players and right now Neymar seems to be the talking point. He just won the Copa Libertadores with Santos of Brazil, that’s a player and a country to be looking out for. Then again you’ve got Argentina and it’s going to be in Argentina, so I’m sure you can’t count them out.I think Uruguay could be the dark horses if they play anything like they played in the World Cup. They were a very difficult team to beatMexico, they do what they have to do. They are very exciting, play some good stuf but I think this tournament is going to be a step up on the Concacaf tournament which they won.It will be a lot harder for the Mexicans, although if they go in with the right frame of mind and things go their way, they do stand a chance.
