In tough times we must be one another's keeper
I’d like to take a moment to thank the bloggers, comment writers and others who voice opinions on this column. Your feedback is appreciated, welcomed and desired. Long may it continue and long may it continue to be constructive, informative and positive. It’s getting cooler in the evenings now. That tells me that winter is around the corner. From the reports I hear, this is going to be a tough winter. Folks, we need to start bracing and preparing for the worst. Even if we are OK, we need to look out for those who are not OK and who are not going to be OK. We have to really be our brother and sister’s keeper, now more than ever. More on this after the top 20.Still at #1 is the hottest anthem on the planet Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, easily the hottest song in the world. You hear it in advertisements, on sports programmes, in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, TV, radio, everywhere. Holding at #2 is Rolling In The Deep by Adele. This is a most unique track. You have to like Adele’s soulful and sultry voice. She would have done well back in the day when live entertainment was the only option and people didn’t have studios to help out their voices.Up to #3 is I’m Into You by Jennifer Lopez featuring L’il Wayne. Falling to #4 is Last Friday (TGIF) by Katy Perry. For some reason Katy Perry seems to have a magic touch in that every song she releases does well.Halting its decline at #5 is Give Me Everything by Pitbull, Neo, AfroJack & Nayer, still a dance anthem. At #6 is Enrique Iglesias’ current hit Tonight I’m Loving You. Motivation by Kelly Rowland featuring L’il Wayne owns the #7 spot this week.Up to #8 is the new one from Chris Brown, entitled She Ain’t You. Down to #9 is the Latin/Soca Anthem Danza Kuduro, by Don Omar; Pit Bull; Lucenzo; DJ Laz and Qwote. Tumbling to #10 is Run the World (Girls) by Beyonce.Up to #11 is a former essential new tune I Wanna Go from Britney Spears. Down once space to #12 is Just Can’t Get Enough by the Black Eyed Peas. Tumbling to #13 is Beautiful People by Chris Brown featuring Benny Benassi. Falling to #14 is 6 Foot 7 Foot by L’il Wayne featuring Cory Gunz.Improving to # 15 is Put Your Hands Up (If you…) by Kylie Minogue. Up at #16 is Best Thing I Never Had by Beyonce. Now some soca anthems. Up at #17, is Wotless by Kes The Band and improving to # 18 is Bend Over by Machel Montano.Shifting gears to dance hall, climbing to #19 is Mavado’s summer dance hall hit, Fly Away. New at #20 is his other hit Pepper. Now back to this week’s topic being our brother and sister’s keeper. Our unemployment situation hasn’t improved much. The Government is doing all it can and really trying to assist. There have been many events, activities and programmes aimed at helping Bermudians find jobs. However, there are still many people out of work.In addition to persons who are still unemployed, with others being added to this segment daily, there are many businesses that are struggling with reduced revenue, increased costs in some cases and the scenario where it is just so much harder to survive in business in these times. This situation is a recipe for a long, hard winter. If things don’t improve, more businesses may close between November and March, traditionally our period of reduced revenue generation for many businesses, especially locally-owned businesses. So we have to consider others now. Even though we may have a job and be able to provide for our families, there are currently many people who are struggling to make ends meet, who cannot make ends meet, who haven’t for months made ends meet, who may have nowhere to live and who don’t eat regularly. This is both bad and sad.I am to remind myself and others that if God has blessed us, the blessing isn’t just for us and our families; we are meant to help and bless others.I am reminded of that old axiom, “To whom much is given, much is expected”. What is expected is that after you have taken care of your family’s basic necessities; it is time to help others. We cannot live our lives in silos and continue saying that other people are to blame for their circumstances. Even if that is true; those of us who are blessed are blessed by the grace of God and I’m reminded of another moniker, “There but for the grace of God go I”. So please remember that if it were not for the grace and favour of God; you or I could be that person who is unemployed, homeless, etc and conduct yourself accordingly. Here is why this is necessary.Throughout the history of mankind, there have been haves and have nots. Whenever the have nots cannot get the basic necessities, they will tolerate this for a while, in some cases many years and through many generations. However, unless the situation changes and they can get a piece of the pie, or at least the basic necessities needed to survive, such as food, shelter, clothing, the things on Abraham Maslow’s first level of needs; they will soon revolt, take action and engage in crime, antisocial behaviour, simply taking it from the ‘haves’.I am in no way condoning this. I’m just telling you what has happened and what may happen again. If people in Bermuda do not see that some of the behaviour currently being exhibited by some persons is related to their inability to get the basic necessities; then I say those persons have their heads in the sand. We need to look out for the ‘have nots’ because if we don’t, right or wrong, it is going to affect all of us.Locking away all the criminals is the correct judicial response but still doesn’t solve the problem because eventually we will run out of space in the correctional facilities. Prevention is better than cure, so why not invest in systems and infrastructure to help all of us be able to provide for ourselves and our families? This is what I’ve heard former Senator David Burch call ‘investing at the front end’; as opposed to having to pay at the back end, through the $60,000-plus a year it costs to house, feed, clothe and maintain a person in the corrections system per year.So let us all become more frugal, save for the rainy days ahead, buy Bermuda to support local businesses as much as we can, help others who are less fortunate than we are, have hearts of compassion as opposed to looking down our nostrils at others; and basically be a more empathetic people, where we all look out for each other. My prayer today is for new jobs, for an improved economy asap, economic growth, a reduction in unemployment, all of which will give people hope; but at the same time, for lessons learned so that we are not caught off guard or so unprepared for tough times in the future. Peace…..DJLT.
