Can any team stop rampant Village?

ootball is well on the way and it appears this year’s league title could be over before we know it. North Village have totally dominated thus far and the big question is, can anyone stop them?North Village appear to be on a high, evident by their dominance. The talk amongst the people makes reference to them doing the impossible, going the whole year undefeated. Is that realistic or merely a fantasy?Village have the ability to go on and win all of the major trophies before them but the task is a daunting one, much more difficult than we think. One bad game or a couple of injuries could change their whole season quite quickly. The one team they will have to get over, who always seems to have their number, is Dandy Town, who they will meet in the Dudley Eve finals.Dandy Town, over the past few seasons have got the better of North Village, thus preventing them from a treble last season.Shaun Goater has recruited one or two quality players to add depth to his team and they are gelling nicely. Their signature slick passing game and movement has teams mesmerised, causing them to always be a step behind. However, styles make match-ups and Dandy Town’s style of football seems to be the antidote for their sleek movements. Town have the most potent goal poacher in the division in Raymond Beach. His ability to score goals and his constant running has caused all teams trouble and North Village are not immune to his prolific abilities. In the league, outside of Dandy Town no one even appears close to dethroning North Village. Already every team have suffered at least one defeat.PHC have been very inconsistent thus far but on their day have shown they can also be a handful for Village. However, they have taken two six-packs early in the season and look highly unlikely to stop the mighty red and white.Boulevard are another team with a rich history of playing well and causing teams trouble but Village have already given them a football lesson. The Blazers will have to dig deep this season as they have lost quite a few players from last season, thus ruling them out of being the spoilers.St. George’s seem to be the dark horse team. Consistent with last year’s performance under coach Richard Todd, they are a team not be taken lightly. They have a potent attack, scoring goals will not be their problem. It is whether they can stop others from scoring. Last year outside of North Village they had the next best defence statistically.Village has thumped St. George’s once early in the season but now with some games under their belt, St. George’s will be looking to turn the tables on them.Somerset, the new boys in the division, are running on adrenalin. The hype of being back in the top flight should make them competitive for the first half of the season but for the second half of the season we will see what they are really made of.Silver City, as it was once called, is still a long way off seeing the glory days again, but with a good blend of youth and experience Somerset are on the right track to future success.St. David’s are another team who lost a bunch of players and it is it noticeable by their results. Unfortunately, they are not strong enough to stop Village either, but I am sure on game day they will put in a valiant effort.Last year Village thumped them in back to back games, scoring seven goals in both. St. David’s will look to make it more competitive this time around but they won’t be strong enough and could find themselves relegated if they don’t start pulling some wins together.Southampton Rangers have blossomed under the coaching of Keith Jennings. They have shown they have the ability to compete. So far their season has been up and down.Rangers on their day are a very tricky team. This are definitely a team that cannot be taken lightly. They can compete with Village because they are fighters.Up on their small field they may be able to spring a surprise as the field negates Village’s style of play. We shall see as this Village team are becoming more and more ruthless by each game.Robin Hood will prove to be a tricky team as new boys in the division. Under coach Andrew Bascome they are fundamentally sound, but could this be a step up too soon? They picked up a few players in the transfer this year to strengthen their team and they appear to be a well-organised team. No, they won’t be easy to beat, but again simply not strong enough to stop North Village.Lastly we have Devonshire Cougars, the team who never stops competing. They have a new coach in Dennis Brown, which means a new philosophy. How quickly the players adapt to his philosophy will determine their fate. So far they have played Village three times and have been defeated all three times. However, as always they show resilience every time they walk on the pitch. Their supporters have high expectations and very rarely are they disappointed. Although Village has dominated them thus far, they are the ones that could put a spoke in Village’s wheel and stop them from going undefeated for the season.North Village’s success is a direct result of the program that they have put in place over the last 15 years. Their program structure should be adopted and modeled. Their consistent youth program makes the difference, habitually producing quality players who eventually filter into their senior team. They are the Manchester United of Bermuda football. If teams are not careful Village can go on and dominate football for the next decade.Youth development is crucial to any program, hence the reason why next week I will take a closer look at how coaches view the importance of youth development, and when does winning become important or should it?
