Seven wishes for a wonderful 2012

I wish to extend Happy New Year greetings to all of my readers. I also want to personally thank you for both the positive and negative comments. Just to know that so many of you take the time out to read my column, faithfully, inspires me.As we move into 2012, I am sure we have all set some New Year’s resolutions. As a sports lover there are several things I would like to see happen, achieved, or fixed for the betterment of sport in Bermuda. Here is my wish list for 2012:Wish number one: In cricket, my wish is that the Eastern and Western Counties put their differences behind them and come to an agreement for the sake of the sport and their spectators. The ongoing saga has put a huge damper on our national sport as two of the top clubs, Rangers and St. David’s, were both non-participants in the series last summer. This brought about less appealing County matches on both ends, thus leaving the champions and fans totally dissatisfied. Also in cricket, the national team are preparing for a major T/20 tournament in Dubai with the chance of qualifying for the T/20 World Cup. It is my hope that with a new selection committee in place, that all of Bermuda’s best players will make themselves available so that we can start the year off with a bang. To have all of the players out to training and seeing them putting their best foot forward is all we as a country can ask for.Lastly, in cricket it would be nice to see us get more young players overseas in England playing. Kamau Leverock had trials last summer with Sussex and they were very pleased. It would be lovely if he could return there this summer and seal a contract with the senior team as he is without a doubt Bermuda’s brightest prospect.Wish number two: In football, my wish is to see more and more young players given the chance of success in England. Nahki Wells, Freddie Hall, Dale Eve and Jonte’ Smith are currently paving a future there and with the right connections and commitment, we can double that amount, if not triple it. This can only help improve our national set-up.Also, on the list is for the Bermuda Football Association to take us back some 15 years by bringing an English team to our shores for two or three exhibition matches. I remember when I was young watching Manchester United, Nottingham Forrest and Aston Villa here. Can you imagine if United, Chelsea or Arsenal would grace us with their presence on their way home from their pre-season games in the USA? Better still wouldn’t it be awesome to see Shaun Goater make a return to the pitch in an exhibition match playing one half with Manchester City against our current national team?Wish number three: Just recently we saw Teresa Perozzi win a world title in Trinidad. As we all know, boxing was very popular in Bermuda during the PYC (Pembroke Youth Centre) days. Wouldn’t it be awesome if in 2012, Bermuda can witness a title bout with our own Teresa Perrozi, outdoors at the NSC with over five thousand people in attendance?Wish number four: Bermuda has now had the end-of-season PGA golf classic for several years and not once have we been privy to the world’s best golfer. In 2012 folks let us keep our fingers crossed that Tiger Woods will win a major and finally make it to our shores to electrify the golfing audience. I wonder how many of us would leave work or take a vacation day just to see him play? Having said that, could 2012 see a Bermudian emerge on the professional golfing scene? It has been a long time coming!Wish number five: Bermuda, the reality is our Island is very small and very limited and we must always find ways to capture the people of our Island through sports. We may have to follow the direction England took and have a live NFL or NBA game here in Bermuda. What would it cost? How many people do you think would turn up to watch? So many of us fly to the US to watch an NFL or NBA game from time to time, can you imagine watching one in our own backyard?Wish number six: Just this past week, I read about young Kiara Baxter and Venicia Raynor, both playing netball in the UK, and making a name for themselves. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see them both make the final cut and tour with England to the Under-21 World Championships in Australia, knowing that they are Bermudian?Wish number seven: In 1976, Clarence Hill won Bermuda’s first and only Olympic medal, since which many have tried and failed but in 2012 could we see that change. As many of us will travel to England to support our athletes, wouldn’t it be fabulous if this could be the year that we finally reach the podium again? Who or which athlete has what it takes to make history? Over the next month or two there will be several more Bermudians trying to qualify so that they too can perform at the Olympics. I wish them well!Bermuda there are my top seven wishes for 2012. As athletes, no matter what sport you play, or participate in, I urge you to put your best foot forward in 2012.Often times in the past you may have fallen short, but looked back and said if only I had done this or did that. Well I empower you to make that extra sacrifice in 2012 to be the best that you can be so that all of your dreams and goals are achieved.Quote of the week: ‘The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when no one else is watching’ Anson Dorrance
